I may have to buy another X1

I was going to the IT Show actually to try it out but as you said... too crowded. I usually just zip in and zip out to buy the things I need like Sandisk SD cards or printers. I never stay long, as the parents with prams just push through anyone to get where they want to.

cj just get the M9. You won't regret it. :)

Yup I absolutely hate that kind of crowd. Crazy IMO. I can get better prices elsewhere any time in the year.

At this time I am not into an MF camera. If Leica offers a R solution that may be another option if it has AF. The M9 is great, but I like to use AF( at this moment not much mood to work so hard for images). If no AF solution comes out from Leica (I cannot afford the S2) I guess I'll end up buying it.

CJ: I agree with your thinking. I love my X1. Saw a black X1 recently and almost bought a second one - it' so beautiful and distinctive.

I too come from Nikon lenses, and own a D700; but it's so very heavy. One workaround that really works is the D3100 - it's really light (similar to a 4/3 system, but with a bigger sensor), and the shutter is quite, but not as quiet as the X1. For travel photography one needs zoom (tele and wide) and macro capabilities. The X1 alone obliges one to take a different perspective. Carrying both cameras, which is less weighty than the D700, I find that I use the D3100 mainly. Leaving the D3100 home forces me to do a different type of photography altogether.

cheers,

john

I'm not sure if this is true (maybe other members can correct me):

But is there a camera on the market that has a sensor-based autofocus (as opposed to the regular lens-based autofocus)?

I vaguely recall discussing this topic with someone a while ago, but for the life of me can't remember the details of that conversation.

John,

Funny how I am quite the opposite of you for travel. I am completely comfortable with using just the X1 for travel, and never felt wanting of more focal lengths. But for work I use a lot of macro, and for specific events and other stuff I use a combo of zoom plus primes. The X1 is IMO less suitable for work, at least for what I normally shoot.

On one thing we agree 100%, we both like the X1. it's one great camera.

I read about it some time back, but nothing came out of it, at least not yet.:)

That's a real shame. Technology like that (if adequately responsive, read: fast) can be a great solution to "adding" auto-focus to these stellar vintage Leica glasses (R- or M-line).

Precisely, if there's a portable M-solution like an AF M9 I'll buy it. The one single consideration that weighs against buying the M9 most heavily for me is the lack of AF.

Ah, but the real question is, did you buy her an adapter to use your M-lenses? :p

Hell no... ;) Her criteria was smaller than an SLR but works like an SLR. She wanted AF, a VF, a zoom, and fast performance without SLR size / weight ... that brought me to the G2.

and by that you mean giving camera gear you could use yourself right :)

Shoot, I've been with my gf for going on 3 years, I wouldn't hand her down the x1 - it would be a waste tbh, she's happy using the gf1 - she thinks it's great. (it mostly is!)
