phancj Posted March 9, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted March 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bought my wife a dlux5. Â Probably still having to end up buying her a X1 too. Â The photos from the X1 are way too good for its class. Â And no, I dont want to buy that bulky X100, also I do not need a VF for a travel camera. I like the "semi-zombie" position when I use a compact. Â Next question is probably black/silver, which case, etc, etc, yada yada.....I am thinking of converting the new X1 to white leatherette for her. Â These similar threads are annoying I know, but I am serious. Â Anyone knows somewhere where I can buy a new X1 at less than the marked retail price? Coz even my regular dealer is totally unwilling to knock a single cent off its retail price citing good sales and low stock availability. Â And no, I do not need to wait for the X2 or X3. And right now there still isnt a single real small camera as good as the X1. Do not get started about nex, grd, , etc,etc....been there. Â And yes I will buy even without a FW upgrade. Â Ideas? Advertisement Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Hi phancj, Take a look here I may have to buy another X1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ezc203 Posted March 9, 2011 Share #2  Posted March 9, 2011 DON'T DO IT!  If she gets hooked on Leica (and with the X1 she'll most definitely will), you'll become a very poor man  -  But in all seriousness, I think a black X1 with an optional leather covering (ie: some snake/lizard skin from Morgan at cameraleather.com - white or grey) will totally rock your wife's world.  Trying to get one for less than retail? Hmm... Pretty tough right now. Leica's growing popularity is jacking up the prices off most (if not all) of the products.

phancj Posted March 10, 2011 Author Share #16  Posted March 10, 2011 Hi all,  Thanks for all your kind suggestions of getting one used, but I have NEVER bought anything used. I know it's silly but I just like to get everything new be it watches, cars, cameras, comps whatever. If I start by buying my wife a used X1 it may affect marital bliss haha...  I am not well off but will be able to afford another X1 new.  give your x1 to your wife and get a proper m for yourself  At one time I decided on an M9 with a 35 lux. I tried it (plus M8) and experienced some WB issues. Also the lack of AF is something I was not comfortable with, having been reliant on AF for the longest time, even with the slow AF of the X1 I have never been wanting faster AF for the kind of shots I care to take. AF allows me to enjoy the process more instead of having to manually adjust focus, I wear progressive lenses and it can be a strain after some shots. I can operate the RF well but I know for certain I'll be much faster with AF.  Also, I travel really light (thats why I like the X1/MBA combo). The M9 had a hefty feel which was nice but I prefer my X1 in a waist pouch. I might end up with an M9/noctilux (nothing urgent just a fancy) but it is something I'll most likely look at after updating my nikon body. Reason is my new 1.4 nikkors are actually brilliant but my D300 is the archilles heel and I am waiting for the new crop of nikon FF bodies. Personally I see the M9 (for me) as a tool for much more considered shooting, the X1 is a nice toy camera I bring along for traveling and it take wonderful shots.  Right now I am trying to find a new X1 at less than its RRP but it seems impossible. So much for the talk that the X100 will kill the X1. I figured if retailers think that way they'll be more than willing to make less profit on available stock but it sure aint so.  CJ

A camera like the X100 will be sold everywhere and the streetprice will drop like crazy in a year, all the online price comparision sites like pricegrabber.com will offer it alot less. Next question is probably black/silverI think with the silver-grey one you can do nothing wrong, i think most women prefer silver over black, like they prefer white iphones The best would be an all white X1

Moreover I have the grey X1. But I am sure she will like a white one.
tc4237 Posted March 10, 2011 Share #19 Â Posted March 10, 2011 cj, are you in singapore? Â saw a newspaper saying x100 (~$1677 SGD) is for sale at the "it show" this week, will u be going to give it a test/sample shots? Â it show starts today... and i have a test tomorrow... =( Â Edited:X100 price...
phancj Posted March 10, 2011 Author Share #20 Â Posted March 10, 2011 Yes, I am in Singapore but will not go to the IT show for sure, too crowded! Â I have my regular stores who will accommodate my "tests" whenever I am buying gear. I can even take the test cam out if I wish. So no need to get into the long queues... Â Honestly I have not much interest in the X100, the main concern being its size for what it is (APS-C). I also do not like retro for retro sake and the thing looks contrived to me. I prefer the clean lines of the X1 plus its tiny size and thinks the X100 looks really ugly. IQ could be good but right now whatever is out there the images look good but no better than the X1. If the X100 had came out before the X1 I would have bought it for sure I think but not now. And I will NOT buy my wife a fuji that'll be a bad marital mistake. Â I do not think the x100 will take off well in singapore compared to say the Nex. Right now friends who are cam buffs are already ringing me and telling me how they think the x100 is overpriced, image quality so-so, poor bokeh wide open, etc, etc. Funny coz I just got a call from a friend saying exactly that. I have no doubts that in Europe/States/Japan the camera will be one hot seller but here the VF is not a definite requisite for most and branding counts big time too. Not that fuji is not a good brand but I think Nikon/Canon/Sony has such overwhelming brand presence. Add fixed lens and I can already see where it's going here. We'll see, but I am sure I will not be far off in my assessment of the market here. Â When I bought the X1 a year ago some thought I was freaking nuts, it was hilarious. The X100 like the X1 is destined to be a niche camera with relatively low volume sales here. Any report of it being "sold out" here will be like the case of the X1, coz the number of units available here is not that many. Â My wife insisted I buy an M9 so she can have my X1 but right now I am not "feeling" the M really.
