Leica Customer Service Problem

Last week, I sent my Leica M7 to Germany for replacing the DX reader that will be free charge I asked the Service before.

However, I received a e-mail from Germany. It lists many labour costs for instance,

adjust Din / ASA adjustment

repair/adjust contact

adjustment of shutter times

adjust exposure meter

adjust range finder

clean range finder.

but I just want to replace the DX reader. Is it necessary to do these improvement? May I ask them that do not carry out those services and just replace DX reader?

Thanks.

You can ask, but Leica is reluctant to return a less-than-perfect camera to you. If they fix all, you will get a year's guaranty on the whole camera. And reading it, you will get a better camera, this is necessary maintenance.

I would be very interested in how this turns out cost wise, if you decide, to do it.

I too still have a M7 with the older DX reader.

The camera is is nice condition and works perfectly for me, while I never use the DX reader, but set ISO manually.

I consider, to have the M7 upgraded though (depending on the costs).

Given that the OP's three previous posts were all about a faulty M7 shutter, assuming it's the same one and they haven't had it repaired already, I'd say that the proposal to have the camera completely serviced in Solms is a good one.

That is an important point, Andy. Forum members that try to assist can only respond on what we are told.

I also recommend that the rest of the required servicing be accepted and paid for. The additional whole of camera warranty and confidence as well as routine mintenance are very much worthwhile, in my view.

I would also add that I do not think tht this represents any customer service problem (as shown in the thread title). Rather they are doing their job well, checking the camera and advising on additional needed work as well as the free faulty DX reader fix.

No problem. If you tell Leica you don't want them to do the other stuff, just don't complain if the camera packs up after it's returned to you!

I'd say an accurate shutter and rangefinder were pretty important though. How old is the camera? Did you buy new or s/h?

The older DX reader would lead to a ASA problem when you are taking a photo and sometimes it will show in your viewfinder that is the reason why I sent it to Germany.

Hoping yours won't happen this problem :)

PS: if you wanna update the viewfinder into your camera that will cost 250 euro. I asked the service this time.

Thanks for your comment. However, I am on a budget. That is a serious problem. All these services will cost 420 euros totally including the vet.

This is a Second-hand product.

Thanks for the info - does this also include the mentioned 250,- EUR finder upgrade? - if so, I consider it a reasonable cost for the adjustments + warranty.

I wonder, if I could benefit from a finder upgrade too, as my earlier M7 with x0.85 finder flares badly, compared to my M8.2 and the 0.72 MP 2003.

In order of flare (nicest to worst in %, when shooting at night with strong light sources around - cars, street lamps, etc…):

Leica M8.2: 0%

Leica MP 0.72: 0%

Leica M7 0.85: 40%

Leica M6 classic 0.72: 60%

Sounds as if it needs some routine maintenance.

Many years ago a neighbor was looking at a Rolls Royce. The dealer pulled financials on him to be sure he could afford it before they would sell him one.

Budget and Leica do not go together well.

This is a major reason keeping me away from a M9. Repairs could run thousands and if you can not make them, you have a $7000 paper weight.

Call me a cynic but seems a bit of cunning ruse to get a few paid for items to be carried out whilst carrying out the free service of the DX reader upgrade. I wonder how many M7's have had the DX reader replaced and it actually be free of charge. I am still in about three minds as to getting my M7 upgraded.
