Internet Provider for X1

I am ready to buy my X1. Eventhough I am a big fan of buying local (there is a Leica dealer 1 block from my work) I am considering buying online.

For those who may ask why, between the camera, bag, grip, voigtlander vf and possibly the thumb adapter, even if the sales tax is only 6.5 %, I will end up saving some money here.

Any idea about a reputable online source ? for the record, I contacted B & H and was less than impress by the quality of the answers I got (see previous tread about VF) even if I literally spoke to more than 10 different reps...

Dale photo and video comes highly regarded, though I've never done business with them personally.

I bought my X1 from these guys: http://kspphoto.com/spec_sheet.html?catalog[product_guids][0]=d50f84c7-d72d-4bf4-a15a-06e521f58d8e

But I bought in person. I think you can order online with them as well though.

My x1 was purchased from Tamarkin.com no complaints . I bought my thumbsup from dale photo while I was on vacation in near ft lauderdale and I went into their store. I was quite impressed with their operation and knowledge

I am a big fan of buying locally too. It's my first choice.

Second choice is ordering through Steve Huff's links so he gets credit because I value his blog.

Third choice, if it's entirely monetary (10.25% tax in my city) is to order where the exchange rate is good. Google is engineered to block this. You will have to access google.__ (__ being the country suffix). When the Euro was down I got the X1 for around $1350 if I remember right. I bought it from http://www.leicashop.com (which is in Austria). Current exchange rate with shipping and no VAT puts you at $1,838.924

...service was great by the way and you don't have to pay import duties to the shipping company.

I take it that you won't go running to that local dealer if/when you run into any issues with your new camera, or need small accessories for it?

Here's an idea, why not at least give them the chance to compete, see what deal they can do on the camera and accessories for you. You'll probably get a lot more besides which no internet dealer can offer you.

i like popflashdotcom. besides brand new, they often offer used or demo equipment with a discount and a warranty of some kind. basically they handle leica, ricoh and zeiss, though they have broadened their stock recently to include the olympus pen, etc. i have dealt with them for several years and have found them excellent.

I agree with James. It's worth a try.

However when I tried the same thing with my local shop (same family running it for over a hundred years) they got angry at me, saying (rightfully so) that they have employees to pay, rent to pay, and I should want to contribute taxes to the great city I live in rather than pay money to a robot online company killing small businesses. They refused to compete with online shops. They also said they couldn't due to Leica dealership pricing restrictions. They couldn't even offer me a student discount, or a cash discount for not using credit cards which cost them 1.5%-3%.

Since I couldn't afford it otherwise I got the camera from leicashop.com, and get what accessories I can locally to support them. As for repair services that's done with Leica directly, if my package makes it to them :(

amazon :)

If so, use the link on Steve Huff's website if you want to support him.

With a local shop even if there is no discount and there are taxes to pay they can often make it up with SD cards, tripods and other useful freebies, and these are negotiable.

I find it better to be able to see the exact camera I am buying.

Gotta' go with earful: I've had great success with Popflash. Good selection, service and prices. Tony and Alex are knowledgeable and responsive. BTW, no affiliation, just positive buying experiences.

How about using the links on THIS forum if you want to support US?

Sorry Andy, I didn't even think of this forum as a place that needed to be "supported." I guess I wasn't clear on the difference in it's inner workings from something like Apple's support forum.

However, "rolling your eyes" at your forum participants (and consistently similar condescending actions in other threads which I won't list here) doesn't inspire me to support you.

Simply mentioning that this forum can be supported in the same fashion as Steve Huff's would have sufficed. Now that I know I CAN support you, you should be careful to make sure I will want to ""

What makes you think this forum doesn't need financial support? This place costs a lot of money to run. It's completely independent of any major supporter and relies on its advertisers, sponsoring members, the fees from the B&S section and volunteer moderators to exist. Sending people to other websites to support them, rather than the people who do support this forum, seems highly unfair. Apple's forums are 100% paid for by Apple - they pay to host, run, moderate and so on - they are completely different from this forum.

I am sorry if you felt my post was condescending (indeed, apparently, that many of my posts are condescending). I was merely using the "rolls eyes" to indicate that I felt the suggestion to go off and support someone else, rather than this forum a bit unfair. Condescention wasn't my intention. I will be more than happy for you to let me know which of my posts you consider to be so.

Thanks

Thanks for the apology it did come across that way as did several other recent posts of yours.

I will support the forum now that I know it can be supported. Many forums are just "out there" in space and don't need or have ways of supporting them. Apple's support forum is one, Intuit's support forum and Intuit's online "community", there are a whole bunch. I thought this was like those simply because I knew no other reason why it wouldn't be. I didn't know that there were Forums where it wasn't people's paid job to monitor it or whatever, other than SH's and similar bloggers. Now I know.

I see nothing but trouble in your post. You are on your own.

That reminds me- If you have a .edu email and register it through your existing username, you receive free 2 day and $3.99 overnight shipping on all your orders. No affiliation by the way (obviously- it's amazon)

Prime is a good buy too, saves having to fight xmas masses on a lot of small items.. generally I find it pays for itself quickly.. but I'm averse to large crowds in small spaces.. when it doesn't involve music :)
