28mm and 75/90mm for M6 TTL...??

I've been away from this site for a while. I (foolishly) traded my M6 a couple of years ago and have only now got the cash together to replace it. I'm buying a mint M6 TTL c/w 50mm 'Cron and I'm looking for recommendations for a wide lens and a portrait/tele lens to form part of a light travel / street / landscape / portrait kit.

Clearly, I'd love to have Leicas but budget restraints don't permit (even good s/hand ones are outside my buying power just now).

The lenses I've seen and that I'm considering are:

28mm

- Zeiss Biogon f2.8

- Konica M-Hexanon f2.8

- Voigtlander VM f2 Ultron

- Minolta M Rokkor f2.8

75/90mm

- Voigtlander 75mm VM f1.8 Heliar

- Konica 90mm M-Hexanon f2.8

Remembering that I need to use both lenses for travel, street, landscape and portrait.

1. Are the any others in the same "bracket" that I should be considering / looking for?

2. Which of the ones I've listed would make the best "kit"?

3. For no particularly good reason other than to have matching handling characteristics, I'm drawn to pairing up the Voigtlanders or the Konicas. If I were to do that, which do you believe would be a better "pair"?

Any advice / reasoning / additional suggestions you might have would be welcomed.

Thank you.

Paul,

if you have not so much money to spend, you can go for a 2 lens set: 28/50mm or 35/75mm. Although I love my 28mm Summicron,

I should go for the 35/75mm Summicrons instead of a 28/50/90mm lens set. If you want to keep it as cheap as possible you can go

for the 40mm Leica-CL Summicron and the 90mm Leica-CL Elmar or Minoltas equivalents: 40/90mm Rokkor-M.

(Both are for sale in the Buy & Sell section of this forum).

Thank you Frank, I will bear this in mind if the deal I've made falls through.

However, as my original note said, I am already committed to buying a 50mm lens with the M6 TTL. A 28mm is my preferred choice for wide angle and I'm just undecided which of the lenses I listed will make the best combination.

The 75mm/90mm is likely to be the least used but I do like those focal lengths, even for landscape, when I want to isolate detail against a background.

Thanks again. Paul.

My personal considerations :

1) For the 28, if you are disposed to buy a new Biogon, consider also that good used Elmarit-M can be found at reliable dealers for not too far prices (ex. : Newoldcamera - Prodotti)

2) 50 and 75 are a bit too close if you plan to have a 3 lenses' set, and, btw, the Voigtlander 1,8 has not received enthusiastic reviews (for what I have seen, but admit that I haven't gone deep, being not interested into); so, go for a 90... I haven't idea of the prices for the Hexanon, but consider that the Summarit 2,5 is not so expensive (and I am VERY satisfied with my Summarit 75... the 90 is similar in design and rendering)

If you think that I push you too squarely towards Leica glass... ;)... well you DID abandon M6 and then came back home... learn the lesson... :p

Thank you all for the good advice as to which lenses you believe I should buy. However, as previously stated, I have already given a firm commitment to buy a Leica M6 TTL complete with a 50mm Summicron.

I want to buy a wide angle lens and a short telephoto lens. I do not want to have a two lens set up. If I were able to afford good, second hand examples of Leica lenses, I would do so. Sadly, that is not an option just now.

I've already listed the lenses I am considering and I am hoping that some members of this forum will either be current or past users of the lenses I am considering. If no-one has experience of these lenses, I will have to take my chances. However, I would be grateful for any advice on the lenses I have listed.

Many thanks.

I'd go with the Zeiss 28. Seen good stuff from it. The Konica is spoken highly of too. I'd skip the Ultron unless you need the extra stop. Not that it's bad, it's supposed to be quite good, but if you don't need f/2, you can avoid some of the aberrations that go along with the faster lens. I see no reason to get the Minolta. Some Minolta lenses have coating problems; not sure if the 28 does, but why risk it when there are other good options.

28 and 50 make a very nice setup. It's what I use most of the time. If and when you decide you want a longer lens, I'd recommend a 90 to match up with those lenses. I've heard good things about the Konica 90. While I do have a 75, 90 is better for a kit in my mind. You can also check out the Voigtlander 90/3.5. Leica 90/2.8s can be very good too and you can find them sometimes for a good price.

If you can get a better deal on the two Konicas than you can for the Zeiss 28 and the Konica 90, then I might lean towards that. If not, then get the Zeiss 28 and be happy.

Thank you tgray.

I have Zeiss lenses as part of my Hasselblad kit and I really like them. I've also heard nice things about the Konica 90mm.

Speed is less of an issue with the wide lens as they are easier to get sharp images from, hand-held at low shutter speeds. The f2.8 should be fine. However, although I will probably use the 90mm most when travelling abroad, I live in the UK and any additional "speed" is welcome in our 6 month winters....!!

I've heard that Rokkors can be prone to balsam faults but that, in good condition, they are great lenses.

Right now, I'm definitely leaning towards the Zeiss 28mm Biogon f2.8 and the Konica M-Hexanon 90mm f2. If I can strike lucky with a Leica 90mm f2.5 or f2.8, I will go for it - but the price seems a good few hundred £ beyond my pocket just now. Maybe I'll just have to be happy with whatever I can get until I can afford to upgrade.

Regards, Paul.

*** UPDATE***

Well, I've decided 28mm and 50mm is the route for me. I will, eventually, get a 35mm lens but, as I do a lot of landscape as well as travel / street, 28mm works better with the 50mm 'Cron I've already committed to buying.

So, following the advice given earlier in this thread, I've had a long, hard look around and have found a Leica 28mm Elmarit-M f2.8 which, when I trade in an old CT* 60mm Distagon f3.5 I no longer use with my Hasselblad, becomes affordable.

I've also managed to pick up an old Elmar 9cm F4 in decent condition (for which I'll buy a thread to bayonet converter) and that should have me set for the summer and our holiday to Thailand / Cambodia.

All the best. Paul.
