Leica V-Lux 2

I just purchased a V-Lux 2 contrary to what I read in many Leica forums that said "this is an awful camera with very poor results". I am wondering why all these negatives reviews? My experience so far has been "very satisfied".

Can anyone answer why the camera is disliked so much?

My answer from personal experience is all about the sensor. It is just plain inferior due, in part, from its small size, but regardless it should be better.

I've never used one, but people who own the V lux and Panasonic version seem to like them. There is a pro photographer on this forum who uses one (the old version I think).

Fact is, for some people using M8's and M9's, the Vlux would probably be a better camera for them. It's only when you pixel-peep and want to print large, that the quality differences between sensors and lenses will really become noticeable.

I recently purchased the V-Lux 2 and was tremendously disappointed at first. Lower light (inside during daytime, for example) images were far worse than anything I have ever seen. Took it out on a couple of sunny days an got decent results. It's been mainly on the shelf since and I have resolved to using it in specific situations where I need the zoom and fast AF with plenty of light. I would not buy it again. It is not Leica quality, that's for sure. My old D-Lux 3 is far superior, works perfect for light travel and it has a decent zoom as well.

Cheers, Chris

I shoot for a medium-sized daily newspaper in North Carolina, and use an M9 and M8 as my daily shooters. I carry the older Panasonic version of the V-lux to supplement my rangefinders, and find it very satisfactory for long-lens work and moderate macro shots that are outside the reach of the Ms. I do have to work around a bit of shutter lag, which can be lessened by using manual settings, including focus.

The image quality at 200-400 ISO is okay, but 800 is as far as I can push it, and then ony when absolutely needed. I do find it very helpful to have a lightweight 420mm in my bag.

I've been thinking about the V-lux 2 as well, primarily for the increased lense reach in both diretcions, but have been put off by reports of poor image quality and the loss of some manual capability.

I just purchased a V-Lux 2 ... My experience so far has been "very satisfied".

Hi,

I just bought one myself and so far, so good. I'm just a bit disappointed about the sensor, given the price I paid for the camera, but I think I can manage. Anyway, don't listen to the others ; the better you feel with your camera, the better your pictures will be. ;)

Hello,

my first post in this group. I don't have a real Leica yet, but a Lumix FZ 28 with a Leica lens.

I was looking for a FZ 100, "similar" to the V Lux 2, and shot some photos in a shopping mall yesterday. Better handling, faster zooms compared to my FZ 28, it was like going from a Ford to a Benz.

I nearly bought it on the spot, bur comming home I puit the chip into my TV - the results were a disaster - noise, noise, noise.

As I did not know the camera well enough I shot in "iA" mode. Normally nothing gets wrong in there, but you might not reach the stars in this mode.

The performance was uacceptable. As my FZ 28 is small, light and shoots veryt nice BW (but not only) photos I gonna keep it.

I was offered a Lumix L 1 with Leica 14-50 mm f 2.8 lense NOS for 945 Euros. Similar to Digilux 3.

should I go for it until I can affored a M (?

Heiner, you are posting the same question on different threads, so I shall post the same answer here too.

I'd have to say that I don't think iA mode, in an (indoor?) shopping mall, displayed upon a non-colour corrected TV is the best way to form a judgement on any camera.

Regards,

Bill

Hi Heiner,

Welcome here!

From what you tell us I'd say that you tried the camera in the "auto" mode which is the worst mode ever. The camera must have set the ISO to 800 or more which explains the result you got. If you could go back there, or elsewhere, try the mode "manual"; have someone explain you how to handle it, make raw files, try to get the ability to take some shots outdoors and once back at home treat your files in Camera Raw if you have Photoshop. :)

Anyway if your present camera suits you, just wait until you've got enough money to offer you a M and a proper lens to go with it. ;)
