Want-a-leica Posted February 21, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 21, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have to eat my hat here. I didn't think the M8 would be much of a sports / action camera. But yesterday I took it to shoot a parkour group, and some of the pictures came out surprisingly nicely. The ability to see what's coming into the frame is incredibly useful, and in a way, the fact that the M8 CAN'T blast away at 10 FPS is actually to your advantage, as you have to develop a really good sense of timing when people are running, jumping and flipping at high speeds. The guy who I shoot with uses a 1d mk 3 with 2x16 gig cards...I dread to think how many shots he got:D Mind you, he's good. As I've stated before, I'm a total idiot when it comes to resizing pictures and so on, so I'll take the liberty of using a link here. All comments are of course welcome, I'll just ignore the ones I don't like:p Nagoya Parkour 20 Feb 2011 - a set on Flickr

Want-a-leica Posted February 22, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted February 22, 2011 I don't know if it's thanks to you guys on here, but I had over 600 views on my Flickr account yesterday, nearly all of them relating to the parkour pics. That's almost 3 times more than my previous best for a day. If it was you guys, thanks!

Want-a-leica Posted February 22, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted February 22, 2011 You've gat an M8 without shutter lag! :p Nice shots, well done. Thanks. I just looked up shutter lag, and it looks like the Leica RFs have some of the best figures for this. Is it a common problem in the M8, then? Or am I missing out on an in-joke here? jaapv Posted February 22, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 22, 2011 Yes, it was an in-joke. There was a thread complaining that the extreme shutter lag on the M8/9 made it all but unusable for this kind of photography. Apparently some people can detect 0.09 sec. If only I knew that the M8 has such terrible performance and is so slow, I would never have tried taking action shots like that:cool: Not that you can't see the same thing on DSLR forums (fora?) either. "My 1D Mk3 is one FPS faster than your Nikon Whatever!" "Oh yeah, well my Nikon Whatever is a tiny tiny bit better at ISO 190,345,223,234....and you smell!":p

Want-a-leica Posted February 22, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted February 22, 2011 Nice images. I'm curious to know what settings/iso/ you used for these? The EXIF data for each individual photo should tell you, but from memory I shot most of them at 160. It was cloudy, but not at all dark.
LeicaMSeattle Posted February 23, 2011 Share #10 Posted February 23, 2011 Yes, it was an in-joke. The main reason why RF cameras are not used more in sports photography is the lack of long lenses allowing for tightly composed frames of the subject, typical of good sports photography. While attending the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver B.C. last year, I attended a hockey match between Norway and Switzerland, I shot from where I was sitting with my wife about 8 rows from the ice. I've posted a few of my shots in the "Sports and Leisure" section of this forum. M8/90mm and I was able to get the puck and players in the same frame. I usually shoot sports with a few DSLRs but wasn't officially shooting this match. Proving that sports pictures can be made with an RF camera. It's a matter of developing the skill and knowing how to anticipate the action.
luigi bertolotti Posted February 26, 2011 Share #11 Posted February 26, 2011 The only limit is when you need very long focals... otherwise, even at ISO 1250 as in this link from the sport section, I'm personally satisfied. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/sports-leisure-time/168059-long-jump-indoor.html
