Beginners forum, Advanced forum

I'm still not sure why you consider Digital M users to be more advanced than film users, David.

I don't think that the original post implies anything like that:

I suggest that we should have a beginners forum and an advanced forum for the the Digital M users. How about it

I read that as: "We should have two forums for the Digital M users, i.e. a beginners forum and an advanced one".

Am I missing something?

sorry if there is confusion here. I never mentioned film I was only talking in relation to the digital M where with the success of the 9 there have been a lot of new entrants into the leica system and even into photography. I myself only came to leica 2 years ago but have been around photography for 30 years or so and benefited enormously from this forum. My only thought, and is only a thought, was to suggest a beginners section for DIGITAL m users. It may well be a bad idea and I was just interested in points of view

I read it that David was suggesting a beginners forum and also, further, an advanced forum for Digital M users, implying that only digital M users were "advanced".

Clearly I read this completely wrong. Comes from reading too many legal documents with no commas.:)

my view is that it would split information unnecessarily. 'advanced users' may miss new info/learnings and visa versa.

David, your question probably stems from the fact that there are a lot of nonsensical and repetitious threads here, and IMO possibly more now that the availability of cheap used M8's has introduced a lot of users new both to Leica and to digital. I agree, it's frustrating. :(

But if those folks weren't here, there would be no way to prove that you should be in the advanced forum.

If I may, this forum is unique because it blends experienced users and novices. I (a novice of Leica system) have found this very interesting and most useful. Sometimes I find some experienced user's comments maybe a bit "patronizing", but when I needed advice I found a lot of willingness to help. I think it should remain as it is, and this applies to digital forum as well.

As I already said I don't think a beginners forum (or 'advanced' for that matter) is a good idea, but on one of the cycle forums I've been visiting there is a sticky thread for newbies to ask 'stupid' questions, which has been useful for me.

I think some of us here could be more helpful to newcomers though. Pedantry isn't a requirement to contribute here, or at least I didn't think that it was!

...good point well made, James, and particularly poignant, in these trying times.

I regularly wince at the tone employed by some older members when a new member asks a question which is considered downright undeserving of a straight answer.

It is almost enough to make me scream and go digital.

... Have you seen This Amazon review ?

Nicole--

To be fair, it's the same question we see repeatedly: What should I expect for my $3200 (substitute any value)?

And the advice most often given is, "Hey, if it's not up to your standards, return it."

Maybe we need to extend David's suggestion, and offer forums for

  • Advanced users
  • Beginning users
  • Others
