ui29bk Posted February 15, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 15, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I was wondering whether there are any (leather) cases for the Leica M8/M9 with an integrated tripod mount. I know of Zhous cases and the one Leica manufacture themselves, but I've never seen a case that screws into the camera and has a tripod mount underneath. I guess this would be a nice addition to the camera since I wouldn't have to remove the leather case each time I want to use the camera on my tripod. Any ideas? What do you think of simply drilling a whole in the case and using a longer screw that goes right through the leather? You could use a Manfrotto baseplate underneath. Anyone ever tried this? Does Luigi sell anything like this? (his site is just too confusing for me) Best regards

freusen Posted February 15, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 15, 2011 Does Luigi sell anything like this? Luigi's M8/9 case with tripod mount, you have to order it with the case. Euro 60,00 for the special SS "flush" Tripod screw, fitted to the case bottom (picture from Luigi's website). ------------ FrankR Welcome, dear visitor! Speenth Posted February 15, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 15, 2011 Luigi's M8/9 case with tripod mount. I love my Luigi case in every other respect, but I cannot recommend the integrated tripod mount for two reasons: First, it makes the business of removing the half-case (for battery or SD card changes) a longer process than necessary and second (and more significantly) - on numerous occasions I've jammed my tripod in this mounting because the mounting unscrews from the camera before the tripod unscrews from the mounting! The only way to then separate the two, involves the application of a powerful set of pliers to the Luigi mounting screw thread - generally not a good idea. Luigi is aware of this and offers advice on how to avoid the problem. But, in the light of experience, I now simply remove the case before using a tripod. Despite the foregoing, I can 100% recommend Luigi's wonderful cases. They are fabulous and improve with age. Comfortable in your hands, truly protective and very stylish. Also, from a security point of view, the full Luigi case makes the camera on your shoulder look olde worldy to the uninitiated - not a bad anti-theft deterrent! bill Posted February 15, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 15, 2011 Luigi case good, tripod mount with a leather case bad. You may as well stick a ham sandwich in between your camera and tripod; it will be slightly less wobbly* This is nothing against the Luigi case, simply a statement of commonsense. If you want a rigid rest for your camera, don't introduce something in between the tripod head and the base. Regards, Bill *Depending upon the fat content and how much mustard you use. AncientCityPhoto Posted February 15, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 15, 2011 I personally don't recommend using the tripod mount on a camera period for going to a tripod. Much better to use a an L-bracket, or just the base plate from Really Right Stuff. When you lock this down to a clamp on a ballhead you have a tight and secure connection almost all the way across the base instead of just the tripod hole. It's more annoying, but it is solid. I take my Luigi case off when I am going to be using a tripod as well.
ui29bk Posted March 10, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted March 10, 2011 ... and this is how I solved the problem: I used a leather belt stamp-tool to perforate a hole into the bottom of my Zhou Leather Case Then I fitted a suitable piece of wood between my Manfrotto 341 L-bracket (which I originally bought for a different camera) and the M8 Afterwards I used the second (extra long) 1/4 inch screw that came with the L-bracket to tighly screw it all together With a properly sized screw I wouldn't have needed the piece of wood of course.
