jc_44060 Posted February 10, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've read a couple threads lamenting the passing of some fine specialist shops - so here is my attempt to 'give back' something to the community. I was sorting through my (poorly stored) old films and rediscovered some pictures I had forgotten about. These were taken when I had the good fortune to visit the Hove Camera Company in the autumn of 1978. Not being sure where to put them, I posted them on Flickr in a set named Hove_Camera_1978. Here's the link: Hove_Camera_1978 - a set on Flickr I hope they bring back pleasant memories. Regards, Jerry

MPerson Posted February 10, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 10, 2011 Thanks Jerry. The one shop guaranteed to make my jaw drop and my wallet open every time I went there.
earleygallery Posted February 10, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 10, 2011 Ah memories indeed. My father took me down there a few times, once on a Leica day after I'd bought my lllf and they ran it through a few tests in that very workshop, and declared it in fine working order. I bought a few things from them, mostly books and accessories and, I think, a mint 9cm Elmar.
gyoung Posted February 10, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 10, 2011 Very interesting, I never went there but bought things for work and had repairs done there by mail order. I'm pretty sure from a conversation with him that their 'ace' repair man was Malcolm Taylor, who set up on his own after the shop closed. There was a similar place with an 'Aladdins Cave' in Harrogate, John H Preston, who closed when the owner retired a good few years ago. I also came across this one in Melbourne when we visited :- michaels World-Famous Camera Museum | michaels Camera Video Digital, Melbourne Australia Gerry
martinis Posted February 10, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 10, 2011 Ask Len Lyons about the treasures he found in their workshop when he took them over.
Dan Ryan Posted February 11, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 11, 2011 Gerry - may I add to your notes on Michael's in Melbourne - some shots taken a couple of years ago when I was becoming interested in Leica - this is but a fraction of what is on display, and I did not know what to look for at that time:
