maccaco Posted February 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) You can change the upper and lower parts of the chrome M8 putting blacktop and bottom of the M8 black? ie, change from chrome to black replacing the covers top and bottom of the M8? If this is possible, it is expensive? Thanks!
Advertisement Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Hi maccaco, Take a look here changing parts of M8 to M8 black chrome, possible?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted February 7, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 7, 2011 So what you are saying is you don't have the black parts and you want to change your chrome M8 to a black M8. As far as the base plate they are interchangeable. M8 base plate, any color, will fit on any other M8 or M9. Top plates are the same between the M8's, just a different color. BUT it would be more cost efficient to sell your chrome M8 and buy a used black M8. That could be close to a wash money wise. To change the top and bottom plates may cost you several hundred dollars. That is if Leica still has any spares. Personally I like the chrome better. Had both, sold the black.
maccaco Posted February 7, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted February 7, 2011 Thanks for answering. The problem is that I know the status of my chrome M8 and if I trade it for another black M8, I know the state or has been treated. If spare parts are sold in black color, I understand that they can be put on the chrome (the parts are identical)
maccaco Posted February 7, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted February 7, 2011 I like to think of black brass spent ... as a camera is pretty old and less likely to be stolen (I think)
farnz Posted February 7, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 7, 2011 Welcome to the forum, Maccaco! What I think you're saying is that you'd like your chrome M8 to have a black top deck that will wear over time and show the brass through it (this is called brassing) so that it looks like an old camera and thieves won't be tempted to steal it because it looks like an old camera and not worth very much. Unfortunately this won't work for two reasons: 1. to get brassing the black covering needs to be black paint but the M8's black covering is not paint it is anodised. The M8.2 was available in black paint but I don't know if the top deck for an M8.2 is interchangeable with an M8 (but see point 2 below anyway) 2. the top deck on the M8 and the M8.2 are not brass they're magnesium so you wouldn't be able to get brassing. Pete.
ho_co Posted February 7, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 7, 2011 Getting confused. 1) Black chrome wore to a rather dull gray, not generally to brass, in my experience. 2) I think M8 and M8.2 top plates are brass, just like M9, despite Pete's opinion. Are you looking for a surface that you can scratch up because you like the patina? If so, I have no idea what to do. Are you wanting to change parts of an M8 to a different Leica-original finish? Leica could offer a quote on doing that. Are you wanting to change parts of an M8 to a finish Leica doesn't offer? I don't know whom to ask, but forum members do. I think there are companies who do plating. They could probably strip and paint or strip and chrome. Contact them and find out what they want to start with--anodized, painted, chromed, etc. And welcome to the forum! Sounds like a simple enough question, but it's more complicated than I at first thought!
maccaco Posted February 7, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted February 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you very much everyone for the welcome!. It is an honor. I recently bought a used chrome M8 (a good price) and I like a lot, mind you, but I like the black finish is also worn and so I was wondering if you can change the upper and lower parts. farnz Posted February 7, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 7, 2011 ...2) I think M8 and M8.2 top plates are brass, just like M9, despite Pete's opinion. ... Yes, you're right, I think, Howard: the body is magnesium but the top and bottom plates are said to be milled brass. I feel sure I recall a forum member stripping his M8's top plate back to bare metal so he could paint it and finding a dull silver grey metal that was thought to be magnesium. Pete. gravastar Posted February 8, 2011 Share #12 Posted February 8, 2011 I think it's difficult to change the top plate on an M8 because the serial number is attached to the hot shoe and the way the electrical wiring/circuit board associated with the shoe etc. is soldered and glued. If I remember correctly this was mentioned in Mark Norton's classic Anatomy of the M8 thread post #3. Bob.
Shootist Posted February 8, 2011 Share #13 Posted February 8, 2011 IIRC the top plate comes completely off. No need to unsolder anything. Everything is connect to the main body by flex cables
