gjames9142 Posted February 4, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 4, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Or probably a spot of oil from the shutter lubrication which shows consistently in every picture where there is sky. I am sending back for cleaning. Ironically I bought the X1 as an emergency backup for the M9, so I can keep shooting. Took the X1 to Mexico because it was not a working trip, I wonder if anyone else has had this happen ? Welcome, dear visitor! h00ligan Posted February 4, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 4, 2011 Shady aperture was that shot? Are you positive the front element is clean? Bummer :/ what do leica say?
gjames9142 Posted February 4, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted February 4, 2011 It was probably shot at F8 -- the exif says F9, but is always approximate. Nothing to do with the lens -- something on the lens wouldn't look like that. defined I have tested the camera on a white card, and the dot is is still there -- and more visible at F 16, which indicates something on the sensor. This happens with the M9 -- mine had oil early on, but at least you can clean it. I am sending it back via my dealer. Leica never really says anything -- they just have to clean it. h00ligan Posted February 5, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 5, 2011 Are either of you using blowers to clean off the camera?

h00ligan Posted February 5, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 5, 2011 Not speaking in absolute terms of environment.. this was one complaint.. some said 'great, no dust' others said.. great, no way to get in to remove dust. Makes me a bit timid to continue in the desert with it :/
earleygallery Posted February 5, 2011 Share #9 Posted February 5, 2011 Isn't an X1 sealed? This was something I predicted when the X1 was first shown, and a design fault in using the motorised lens assembly, especially for a fixed focal length lens, which basically helps to suck dust inside the camera everytime it's used. My Clux sensor is now so covered in dust I've stopped using it and it's not worth the cost of repair - hopefully Leica will clean X1 sensors during warranty? My Clux sensor is now so covered in dust I've stopped using it and it's not worth the cost of repair - hopefully Leica will clean X1 sensors during warranty? I must admit I didn't think the X1 would suffer from dust having a non interchangeable lens (had mine a month). Must admit I have not had any trouble with dust getting inside the sensor of my CLux2 (three years old) however, I have had problems with the lens cover failing to open twice which I suspect could be dust related. Happened last summer, it was as though there was something sticking. Wiped the cover in the closed position with moist lens tissues and then gently forced it it open. After that CLux2 was okay until last week when same problem occurred, but again self fixed. As for the X1 why wasn't it made with a fixed, none retractining lens? Surely the removal of that motor could have either resulted in lower price or the opportunity to enhance the lens performance further for the same price? Yes camera would have been a bit bigger. Has the provision of a retractable lens introduced a potential complication for no real gain? Besides I think the camera could have been made more attractive looking with a fixed lens. earleygallery Posted February 5, 2011 Share #11 Posted February 5, 2011 The motorised lens keeps the 'closed' camera as compact as possible, I understand that, and having seen one in the flesh it's a lovely looking compact camera and no doubt it produces excellent results, but the lens takes power from the battery, makes start-up time longer, is another potential thing to go wrong and creates a dust issue. There's dust on my Clux and Digilux 1 sensors, so it seems to be a pretty common issue with any 'zoom' lens assembly design. Lots of users want to add lens tubes/hoods to their X1's, so the compact argument becomes a mute point. I hope Leica follow the lead of Fuji when looking at the design of any X2 and make a 'proper' fixed lens for it.
gjames9142 Posted February 6, 2011 Author Share #12 Posted February 6, 2011 Interesting feedback -- thank you. I read an interview with a Leitz product manager who indicated that the X-1 niche is an area they intend to develop. If they could have a slightly faster lens, a bigger sensor, and solve the ridiculous speed-of-focus issues, they could have a really compelling camera. Oh, and make it dustproof.
