Battery Indicator Problem

I have a brand new -straight from the box X1 bought two days ago . I fully charged the battery and when I put it into the camera the battery condition indicator says that the battery is fully discharged--ie empty . The camera is working normally . The importer has told me to send the camera back to their service agent . I suspect that it is a problem between the chip in the battery and the indicator software and am reluctant to send it away-yet .

I am going to run the battery flat and see if the problem persists on the next charge but in the meantime all ideas/comments /suggestions/input welcome .

Assuming the X1 battery has more than 2 connections (never seen one), a chip in the battery pack will be providing state-of-charge information to the camera - trying to infer state-of-charge from the battery voltage alone is very hit and miss.

I agree you should leave the camera on and drain the battery completely flat, then recharge; you might also do a software reset on the camera if there is one.

If that doesn't work then it's either the battery or the camera which is sulking but tough to know which.

If you are within reasonable travelling distance of your dealer then make sure he has a working fully charged battery (on his demo X-1?), take your X-1 back and try his battery. If your X-1 works ok then it's likely a faulty battery so your dealer should simply give you a new one and return the faulty one to the importer. If the same fault occurs then as it is only two days old your dealer should simply give you a complete new camera and return yours to the importer.

Nigel , many tx for pointing me in the right direction . Yes -the instruction manual is wrong -the graphics showing the battery charge are all transposed ! This did occur to me at the start but as it is German and it is Leica and it is a premium price ( and not Chinese from Cosco ) I immediately dismissed the idea as ridiculous .

Serves me right for breaking the habit of a lifetime and reading the manual.

I am now wondering why as the X1 has been around for 18 months Leica have not reprinted the manual or at least put a sticker correcting the error .Or maybe they are counting on no one reading the manual anyway.

I had the same problem. It turns out that the illustration and statement in the manual about what constitutes a full battery is wrong/backwards. Simply use it as-is; I'm sure that you will be pleasantly surprised.

  • 1 month later...

It happened with me too.

I bought a brand new X1, its original battery is in the second charging and it doesn`t work anymore!

I don`t know if the problem is in the charger or in the battery.

I`m ordering today a replacement battery.

The X1 battery is great. Oe year later it still holds full charge well. I hardly use the spare I bought.

You should claim warranty on the battery!

i alternate batteries...after an outing i take the battery out- and put it right into the charger and take the spare and put it in the camera.... that way both batteries get some use.

 I presume that both batteries have been properly "conditioned"?
