mgreernz Posted January 26, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 26, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I mistakenly purchased a FISON lens hood recently (nice one too, complete with an original leather case) thinking (or rather, not-thinking, as the case may be) that it was for the Elmar 5cm f 2.8. Dumb. OK. I think I've now got it figured. But before I leap in and make another mistake (which tend to become expensive from this side of the world), would someone be good enough to confirm that it's an ITOOY I'm looking for. It seems that it has two versions: an early one with a narrow chromed band and a later model with a wider chrome band. But it seems both are the match for this lens. Right? Yes I use an ITOOY on mine, IROOA blocks more viewfinder because of the flared shape of the hood. 12585 also fits, but looks a bit silly IMHO Gerry
wizard Posted January 26, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 26, 2011 Gerry, while not contemporary, you may also consider the screw-in lens shade of the recently discontinued Elmar-M 2.8/50, it was (and should still be) available in both chrome and black finish (chrome would be the obvious choice for your lens). Its advantages are a compact build and, more importantly, the ability to use your lens cap on the hood, i.e. with the hood installed on the lens. Makes getting ready to shoot much quicker. Andy Thanks Andy, I am happy with the ITOOY, its contemporary (bought when I got my original 2.8/50) and has the patina of 40+years of use I have a lot of hoods, both Leica and some others including straight 39 screw in hoods, chinese imitation 12585s etc etc, In fact nearly as many as I have viewfinders, its like the search for the holy grail, none is quite perfect and the hope has been that the next one will be better Now with advancing years I hope I have learnt better, but probably not! mgreernz Posted January 26, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted January 26, 2011 Thanks for the various responses. I'd also wondered about the hood for the Elmar-M 2.8/50 - but like Gerry, I think I'll stick with an ITOOY, simply to keep it contemporary with the lens and body. Thanks for the help. mgreernz Posted January 28, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted January 28, 2011 By pure chance, I have come across in my workshop (my wife suggests I have the DNA of a squirrel) a short lightweight tube which is an exact and sufficiently firm fit to the external dimension front ring of the Elmar lens. Cut to length and painted black it could ideally replicate an ITOOY lens hood. But I'm at a loss to know the depth of an ITOOY. Can anyone assist please?
