No lemon! Any sensor can develop the same problem at any time. The important thing is that the camera will come back without the red line. If they had replaced the sensor, the new one might have developed the same problem anyway.

As I mentioned above, some later cameras (S2, for example) allow the user to correct the defect at home without sending it in. Others (some Nikons, for example) have built-in software to map out the defect. The difficulty there is that you need to use their proprietary image processing software to read the map-out instructions into the image.

In other words, pixel defects are a fact of life with any sensor.

I'm glad the camera is on the way back to you. Just over a month isn't bad.

Thanks for the update!

Well, I've had a reply from Leica, below.

Thank you for your inquiry about the repair of your Leica M8.

We are sorry to have to learn that your camera was not in good working condition. The repair has been completed in the meantime and the camera has been shipped today. Looking at our workshop receipt, I can see that the sensor has been repaired, not replaced.

All the best !

Can't help but feel that as the sensor wasn't replaced that another red-line will pop up sometime in the future. Have I bought a lemon :-(

It means the dead pixel has been mapped out. Now let's hope outer space does not score another bullseye on the way back to you.

Had a call from the camera shop this morning. M8 is back in Blighty and on it's way for delivery tomorrow.

Turns out they fixed the sensor, dismantled the whole camera, CLA'd everything, adjusted the rangefinder and apparently found a crack (?) in the body, so that's been changed as well.

Came to €600. Thank God I'm not paying for it :-()

No Lemon, just a M8. Had it happen to both of mine. But on both the sensor was replaced.

Will it happen again, Maybe. I truly suspect it will.

Could simply be they don't have anymore M8 sensors and can only do something to repair it.

No- it depends on the number of dead pixels. If they have to map out more than a certain percentage the sensor is out of spec and will have to be replaced. As we (but Leica does) don't know the statistics of the mapping out at the initial fitting of the sensor - it has to be done on all new sensors- we cannot tell when it has to be replaced.

Finally, the M8 is home.

No trace of the red line and the Rangefinder has definately benefitted from it's adjustment.

I think the shutter cocking sounds slightly more willing after it's CLA, though could be my imagination.

To celebrate, I'm off to Liverpool tomorrow for a 2 day shoot on the streets during the St Patricks Day Fun and Frolics.

I have been very impressed by the service received by both Leica and the camera dealer.
