piblondin Posted January 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have an early M7 with the original DX reader. Sometimes I get the tiny flashing dot. Sometimes I turn the camera on and it flashes an ISO speed that does not correspond to the one I've set manually. Otherwise, everything seems to work fine, and I love my M7. Should I send it in, anyway, for the optical reader upgrade? Have any of you decided to just stick with the original DX reader and forego the upgrade? Let me know-- Thanks! Advertisement Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Hi piblondin, Take a look here Owners of Early M7: Did you upgrade DX reader?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tgray Posted January 22, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 22, 2011 I bought my used M7 with the new reader. If it didn't have it, I'd send it in. I hear it's free.
kb7001 Posted January 23, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 23, 2011 I don't have much trouble with the DX reader, but there has been a little. How do I tell if I have the upgraded DX reader? Usually I set the film speed manually -- have never understood the need for such a feature except for P&S film camera operators.
budrichard Posted January 23, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 23, 2011 Both my M7's after about two years developed problems with the mechanical reader and were sent back last Spring for conversion. One works OK and the other thinks K64 is 80 ASA so I set it manually. It will go back this month.-Dick
bill Posted January 23, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 23, 2011 This is a no-brainer. The upgrade is free and the camera comes back like new. Don't hesitate. The way to tell, by the way, is that the original contacts are physical pins that touch and hold the film canister and (sometimes) make it hard to extract. Regards, Bill
christer Posted January 23, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 23, 2011 I had my M7s upgraded although I always set film speed manually. I thought it would be a good thing to have done if I wanted to sell the cameras. That was about seven years ago, and I still have both, and use them. Humood Posted January 23, 2011 Share #7 Posted January 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a brand new M7 last December, being new using the camera after 18 years of digital, I have noticed that each time I press the shutter button half way, a blinking dot appears, turned out I had the ASA disk turned slightly one notch below the DX mark! film turned out alright. Nikkor AIS Posted January 23, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 23, 2011 I got an early M7 and havnt sent to upgrade the DX reader. While I find it diffucult to get the film out of te camera I pass it off as one the charms of the leica M7;). Gregory
piblondin Posted January 24, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted January 24, 2011 Thanks for the replies. My primary concern with sending it in is that the rangefinder, which is perfect now, will become misaligned during the return transit from Germany, halfway around the world. andybarton Posted January 24, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 24, 2011 I wouldn't worry too much about that. Leica send cameras all round the world, all the time. I have an early M7 and had the DX reader replaced foc about 3 years ago. They do a full check at the same time - also for free.
peter_n Posted January 24, 2011 Share #11 Posted January 24, 2011 I upgraded one of mine a few years ago. Upgrade was free and you get a semi-CLA thrown in. Leica Solms did an excellent job. I sent the camera to Leica NJ and they sent it to Solms. It's really nice to take the bottom off the camera and have the film cassette fall out... alun Posted January 24, 2011 Share #12 Posted January 24, 2011 Yes, the DX reader was replaced in my M7 under warranty after developing problems more severe than those you mention. In my case, however, it wasn't just the DX reader -- it turned our there was also a malfunctioning circuit board. Leica Solms also gave it a complete check, upgraded the finder to the MP version, and sent it back in a dinky little drawstring velvet bag. It took two visits to sort out the multiple problems but I couldn't fault Leica's customer service.

Mine is in Solms right now undergoing upgrade to optical DX reader. I mailed it to New Jersey on December 23, and it was logged in at the factory January 21. Getting closer, I guess. My mechanical DX reader has never malfunctioned, but it was sometimes difficult to get the film out. The main reason I sent it in was that the leatherette was peeling off in several spots. I thought I might as well get the reader replaced since it will get an inspection and a CLA in the process.
NB23 Posted January 25, 2011 Share #14 Posted January 25, 2011 I don't really see the point in replacing the DX reader in mine. It works perfectly so I'm happy.
Nick_Yoon Posted January 25, 2011 Share #15 Posted January 25, 2011 Just got mine back from Solms for a DX reader upgrade, plus shutter, meter and rangefinder checked and adjusted, viewfinder cleaned, leatherette replaced.

Nick, how long did this take?
Nick_Yoon Posted January 26, 2011 Share #17 Posted January 26, 2011 Handed in to Leica agent in Malaysia Nov 24, picked up Jan 21. Transit time KL-Solms probably abt 3-4 working days one way. NB. this was over the Christmas/New Year period, so it should be faster at other times of the year, except maybe for summer vacation times.
pico Posted January 26, 2011 Share #18 Posted January 26, 2011 Nope. I have two early M7s that I got second-hand. I'm insecure about sending them away, and don't know how much it would cost for an upgrade. I'll stand-by with status quo.
