Paul Reading Posted January 15, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 15, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought one of the first Digilux 2 cameras new, it is my only digital camera however it slightly frustrates me and I was wondering if there are some solutions:- I have a very old 512md SD card. Will the Digilux 2 recognise a modern 16 or 32gb SD card? If I buy say a SanDisk extreme C10 30mb/s card will it make any difference at all or is the slowness all in the camera? I am on my second lens cap and it will just fall off at the slightest touch. I have not been able to find a 3rd party clip-in lens cap. How have other users overcome this design problem. Do the third party replacement batterys last longer than the original, they indicate a higher number of amp hours but I am a bit of a cynic. Thanks. PS what is a "Tag" or "Trackback" that I can add to the thread?

pop Posted January 15, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 15, 2011 [*]I have a very old 512md SD card. Will the Digilux 2 recognise a modern 16 or 32gb SD card? No, it will not. It will recognize SD cards only which supply up to 2 (two) GB. [*]If I buy say a SanDisk extreme C10 30mb/s card will it make any difference at all or is the slowness all in the camera? Can't say. What are your times with your current setup? Do you shoot jpg or raw? There are quite a few people in this forum who shoot jpg only. They tell us that the jpg image which the camera produces is very difficult to beat with DIY-conversion from raw. It's the raw format which takes much time and space to store on your card. [*]Do the third party replacement batterys last longer than the original, they indicate a higher number of amp hours but I am a bit of a cynic. The batteries for the Digilux 3, the DMC-LC1 and the DMC-L1 will all work in your camera and can be considered "originals". If you haven't found it yet, there's a group of users of the D2 which might be able to provide in-depth answers if they haven't already done so: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/groups/digilux+2.html
Digitom Posted January 15, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 15, 2011 I bought one of the first Digilux 2 cameras new, it is my only digital camera however it slightly frustrates me and I was wondering if there are some solutions:- Congratulations to that wonderful camera. ANd "welcome to the club" (of D2 owners ) I have a very old 512md SD card. Will the Digilux 2 recognise a modern 16 or 32gb SD card? I think not, because these cards are SDHC cards. I use 2GB cards which are very cheap (about 5 Euro). The size is big enough to store more then -I think 200 pics- [*]If I buy say a SanDisk extreme C10 30mb/s card will it make any difference at all or is the slowness all in the camera? See above, may not working. On my 2 Gig cards the writing process is quick enough. I use all time JPG because the Digilux 2 gives very goos shots, and there is no big success in improving the image quality by postprocessing when using RAW. If you store in RAW, the wrinting process is slightly slower, but not tremendously IMHO. [*]I am on my second lens cap and it will just fall off at the slightest touch. I have not been able to find a 3rd party clip-in lens cap. How have other users overcome this design problem. No design problem in general (I have not). But I have to say now I always use the lens hood. 2 advantages: better protection of the front lens and always protection to scattered light. Disadvantage: camera looks -and is- a bit more bulky. [*]Do the third party replacement batterys last longer than the original, they indicate a higher number of amp hours but I am a bit of a cynic. I recommend strongly -everytime it come to that theme- to use original energy cells. Or well known brand batteries, NEVER NoNames. Also you can buy the batteries made for Digilux 3, they have a little larger capacity.
John Thawley Posted January 15, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 15, 2011 I bought one of the first Digilux 2 cameras new, it is my only digital camera however it slightly frustrates me and I was wondering if there are some solutions:- I have a very old 512md SD card. PS what is a "Tag" or "Trackback" that I can add to the thread? If you do a little digging there's a site for parts from Pansonic for the DMC LC1 - Digilux 2's sister camera. There you will find a replacement lens cap (both) however they do have LUMIX stamped in the front instead of Leica. You will also find OEM batteries there. The one for DMC L1 (mate to Digilux 3) will fit your camera and has higher output making it last longer. Nothing higher than a 2GB card will work in the Digilux 2. And, honestly, faster cards will only download to your computer quicker. The bottle neck for writing speed is in the camera's configuration. DO NOT let this camera frustrate you. Slow down... relax and shoot it. Shoot it a lot. It may take a couple of dozen outings... but when you begin to "get it" you'll really see a difference. A difference so significant, you'll get the disease and want to shoot more and more. Trust me, it's a gem. Just relax and shoot. JT
Paul Reading Posted January 15, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted January 15, 2011 This camera is not new to my I bought it in 2004! OK so 2Gb is the maximum size it can cope with and the write speed is camera limited so a faster card won't help. That just leaves the lens cap. The standard cap (Without the lens hood) is a simple push/friction fit and after a short time it becomes loose. Is there a supply of 69mm clip-in lens caps anywhere? farnz Posted January 15, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 15, 2011 Paul, Personally I don't have this problem because the interference fit is quite snug on both of my D2's. You might like to try a little bit of thin tape inside the cap to provide more friction. Unfortunately 69 mm is an odd size but you could acquire a cheap 69 to 72 mm step up ring from that online auction site and use a 72 mm clip in lens cap. Pete. If the camera was stored for an extended period of time, the felt piece inside the round push-on cap probably developed a 'memory' and the "plush" part of the fabric/tape has flattened. Try dipping your finger in water and running it around the felt a few times... get it fairly wet. Then let it try. This may restore the plush characteristic of the felt. If that doesn't work, just find something similar to replace it or add to it. Three pieces of similar material (I'm sure a craft or fabric store will have something adhesive backed) strategically placed will do the job. wda Posted January 16, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 16, 2011 Paul, I do strongly recommend that you keep the lens hood fitted at all times. You soon get used to the extra bulk and discover that a left-hand finger beneath the lens hood also aids camera stability. If you do this, the errant lens cap will reside in the original box. I am a little puzzled why you find an issue with storage capacity on 2gb cards after six years of ownership. Cards in that size are very inexpensive; buy lots! One should easily last for a day's shooting.

DL2 writes max 6-7mb/s ... Sandisk Ultra II is fine. Anything faster eg extreme III DL2 cant write any faster. 3. I had the lens hood on today. When i pushed the lens trough some railings is was so glad the hood buffeted the lens edge from being scratched. 4. I have ordered a 3rd party battery as soon as it arrives I will report. Pol-Alexandre Posted January 16, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 16, 2011 I have here one extra cap, in good shape, and some BP-DC1 batteries. If you are interested... By the way, I totally subscribe to the advices given earlier here by the real experts. Enjoy your Digilux 2 !! Pol-Alexandre
dopey Posted February 5, 2011 Share #11 Posted February 5, 2011 Hi Paul 4. I have ordered a 3rd party battery as soon as it arrives I will report. I went through a 1GB card twice on one battery charge ... ~486 xtrafine jpegs (243 xtrafine jpges per 1GB).
