I am visiting Melbourne for a couple of months on a business assignment, and would love to hear from anyone regarding good Leica dealers, good photo expeditions and any local events. Very happy to meet up and talk M9 matters :)

Reply here or PM me. Thanks.

PS I thought I started this thread yesterday but now I cannot find it so apologies if I have posted twice -- must be jet lag!

+1 for Camera Lane. Alan is a great guy and usually has a good range of lenses and accessories. I've bought a few lenses and such from him.

In the next block is Lonsdale Camera Exchange. They have a big glass cabinet full of used Leica gear at the back of the shop. I bought my M7 from them a couple of months ago, right after they sold the M6 TTL I was eyeing.

Vanbar in Carlton is another Leica dealer. They have new stuff, generally. I bought my M9 from them.

As for photo expeditions and the like, Melbourne is full of good scenery, landscapes, cityscapes, street photography and cafe culture. Loads of good shows, art galleries, museums and such as well. Start in the middle of the CBD and just walk around, it's great.

And if you like jazz and the potential to shoot in dark jazz clubs, try Bennetts Lane. Great music for a decent cover charge.

One of my favourite places to visit and shoot is the National Gallery of Victoria. They allow photography everywhere except for paid exhibitions and a couple of areas upstairs.

Rob, it sounds like you'll have time to visit a couple of shops at least. Try to make Camera Exchange in Lonsdale St one of them. I've only bought an M9 battery there, but it was about $100 less than elsewhere. Sure, it's a bit like a shop from Harry Potter in there, but the staff know their stuff.

Enjoy Melbourne - a former winner of the Most Livable City in the World. Go to the footy if you can.

The Camera Museum on the first floor of Michael's Camera Store (Cnr Elizabeth and Lonsdale) is certainly worth a look. An amazing collection gear from many manufacturers but Leica is very well represented, as you would expect.

Did I mention it's free? Not much about Leica that you can say that about....

Many thanks for this recommendation. I visited the store yesterday and was knocked out by what I saw. It is an extraordinary display --- I expected to see maybe 20 or so cameras. In fact, the Museum has at least 50-80 examples of almost every marque of the past century. I saw my beloved OM-2 (that predated my R4), and many other old familiars of all shapes and sizes. In the Leica section they have some true rarities and one-off releases -- special models for the Luftwaffe, garish, gold-plated R models that make the M9 Titanium look a wonder of tastefulness (which I think it is, by the way), Oskar Barnack jubilee models and so on. The Leica collection alone must be worth a small fortune (maybe not even a small one ). There is nothing in London to match this; in fact I have not seen anything comparable in Europe (stand to be corrected here, of course).

Recommend to anyone visiting the city to put the museum on their itinerary. The store is pretty good too, although Leica prices in Australia seem rather higher than elsewhere.

Hi Rob,

Melbourne is a fantastic city that I was lucky enough to visit on a number of occasions through my work and once on holiday with my wife. It's a shame that it's so far from London!

As far as things to do with your camera, don't forget that in the next couple of months, you've got the Australian Open tennis (on now), cricket at the MCG (involving England) (both are an easy walk from the CBD). The F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park (on the way to St Kilda) is a brilliant day out. In addition, the botanical gardens are also worth a visit.

As for the prices in Aus? I'm afraid you are stuck with a weak pound / Euro and very strong Aussie dollar.

Enjoy your time in Melbourne and Aussie hospitality.

Cheers, Neil

Rob,

One of the best places to visit in Melbourne, is the airport. As you are so close to Sydney, you shouldn't miss out :D

Doron

Spoken like a true Sydney-sider -- I'll ask all my Melbourne work colleagues what they think of your suggestion! :D

I purchased mine from Vanbar, Carlton. AFAIK they still have stock of one black and two silver models there.

Also Camera Exchange, previously on Lonsdale Street in the city, have moved all their Leica stock to Box Hill. They do have an extensive range of new and second hand stock so worthwhile popping out there to have a look as well.
