Sorry to hear about your loss, and I hope that you are lucky enough to get it all back.

On the subject of serial numbers though, if you are using Aperture, the serial number shows in the main Exif metadata information screen. (It's in the middle, just below flash information.)

Insurance is unlikely to pay out if the camera was left in an unlocked car anyway.

As I mentioned earlier, mine has no restrictions (and no deductible), even in the event of my own stupidity. It covers loss or damage of any sort. Mine is a rider to my home policy (premier coverage from a national company) and costs just over $300 US per year for more than $20,000 of itemized gear, which is a bargain IMO. As I said, much less than I used to pay for film.

Why do you asterisk the number out? It is in your best interest to publicize the full number as widely as possible!

well.. I've decided to not make SN public for now. My Leica was a 2nd hand, bought from a local guy in Dubai and still not recorded in Leica site. Currently, nobody sells a leica M9 on Turkish internet sites. I am being silent and trying to not give an alarm to the thief at the moment. Cuz If someone pops up with a Leica M9 on turkish sites or Istanbul, it will be easy to track this guy. Also watching turkish camera sellers on ebay/craigslist.

Hope you can track it down. Or you could set up a website explaining your story and ask for donations for a new one. I'd paypal you a few quid ;-) or enter te competition to win Seal's M9 over at stevehuffphoto.com

a contest? thats sounds good. I'll try my luck even I feel unlucky. :)

I am an engineering student and am considering photography as a serious career option. Yes, I keep still considering even my dream camera aka leica m9 was stolen! I know that It's not about your camera. I always suggest people spend their money and time on learning photograpy, not tellin them buy more gear to take better pics. My former gear was a dx camera nikon d90 which is sold 10 months ago. I never worried about my gear in my whole photography journey.

Here is what i learned from my experiences as a young photographer? The better equipment just makes it faster. With spending more time and effort i can still take better pics with my $120 p&s camera!

Again. Thank you for all your support

Doruk, how can you leave your camera in the car especially in Istanbul??

At the beginning I was keeping my Leica M9 and two lenses in the safe box in my house, later I found it so unpractical :), now I still have some obscessions, keeping them all in the wardrope in the second floor.

I know some people in Istanbul in the second hand market of Leica, if you want I can give their mobile numbers, they may help you.

I am very sorry for your camera.. :(

For what it's worth, I heard about a wedding photographer whose camera bag with $10,000 of cameras, lenses & flashes was stolen from a car. She reported the theft to police. But the next day after work her husband went into town and started posting fliers about a reward. Within an hour he met kids who had a friend who was looking to sell some cameras. Her husband told the kids to tell their friend he wanted to buy the cameras. 45 minutes later, he was able to buy back his wife's bag full of gear for $500.

So, just a thought, maybe being quiet isn't the best procedure. Maybe get all around the neighborhood where it was stolen and offer a reward. The thief likely doesn't know the value of the camera and may be enticed with a "no questions asked" reward of around $500.

Thieves are getting smarter everyday. There is nothing you can do about it except hoping. Jammers are typically used by the police to disrupt communication during bomb threats, not for thieving.:( It is easy to buy, I seen jammer gadget for less than $20 on china websites.

p.s: we all know where are you hiding you stuff.:p

Istanbul is the 5th largest city in the world by population. Seems like I need luck more than ever.

Quite possible, I'm naive enough in matters Mac :(

There are ways to track your computer but not provided by Apple. See here.

However it is ridiculously easy to get into any Mac and switch this off.

To return on topic, I really feel for the original poster, this is a real nightmare ! I have tried to get insurance but no company in this country will cover my gear.

Please people... INSURE YOUR EQUIPMENT!

We get insurance on our cars and many times our leica equipment is worth more!

Either use a rider on your renters insurance/home insurance or get business insurance if you are a pro. The peace of mind alone is worth the cost, nevermind the fact that your equipment may get stolen, forgotten, broken, etc.

That's really terrible news. Please don't do anything stupid. No camera is worth taking your life for. Well maybe an M9 Titanium. I jest. I jest. Hope you can track it down.

The moral to this story is. Get INSURANCE. I'd love to know the percentage of people who have and don't have their M9s insured. For the price of a round of drinks a month you can insure all your kit and these situations can be avoided. (In ref to the above post, you can get a policy that covers these circumstances. My policy covers me for this kind of situation)

Hope you can track it down. Or you could set up a website explaining your story and ask for donations for a new one. I'd paypal you a few quid ;-) or enter te competition to win Seal's M9 over at stevehuffphoto.com

I feel for you as well. Regarding the insurance question, I often read US people praising the insurance system they have. Lucky you guys. Here in France the amount to pay to get the stuff insured is ~ 10% of the price of the stuff. I just don't want to pay 1300€ a year...

Agreed! Here in Australia it is no so bad but still very expensive. I only have less than half my gear insured because of the cost. AU$37000 cover costs AU$1700. I have only had that cover exactly one year. Never before. In that one year I made a $4000 claim. Yes, lucky. I will extend the cover for another year because I will be traveling in 2011, but I am now retired and can't afford everything I should have. Life is about risk taking and I've had(am having) a good one.

That amazes me; I have a Macpro and if I report a theft to Apple the computer will be blocked by Apple as soon as it connects to the Internet. Thiefs know this; a local school was broken into twice - all screens and PCs were taken - twice!. And the burglars left all Macs in place.

Nope. Thats not what Apple support says. The thief uses it like his own. Check with Apple to find out.

Thing is most are not put in this situation so its all hypothetical. it happened to my wife and:

1) Insurance company refused to pay. They viewed all CCTV footages and because the theft was not recorded they refused payment

2) Apple clearly stated they could do nothing, resale is common and person who brings it in for service is assumed the owner.

I thought otherwise too Jaapv but this was exactly what happened. No matter what Apple or insurance says when they sell you stuff.

It happened in one of my stores Andy, insurance was not for the computer per se but for contents of the store.

What happened was in retrospect my wife recalled a large group of Indonesians (presumably from language) was there and they totally distracted the sales staff with inquiries and show of merchandise. But the actual act of stealing was not recorded, probably because they studied the blind spots/their accomplices blocked certain vantage points.

Yes, that is expensive. Have you tried specialist insurers? I currently pay an annual premium of something like 2.5% of the value covered. It's even cheaper if you don't use the equipment for business purposes.

The problem is UK companies do not want to insure non residents. Would you mind sending the name of the comany you are with ? PM is fine !

Many thanks,

Ian
