The camera is a clone to one I have which I figured might be worth $4000 retail, not almost double that. With prices for black paint M4's going north of $15000 I wonder if others have been surprised with what Leica prices are now going for? It seems to me the more common chrome finish classic M's have settled into a $2000-$2500 price for working cameras that are not collectible. Maybe I should start a separate thread but wondering about owner's reactions. Back in 2016, I decided I wanted a nice M4, a 'forever' camera, so to speak. This was a time when an M2 or M3 could be had for £450-£500 retail, an M6 for around £650. Red Dot Cameras had two M4s, one was a mint black chrome for £1650. The other was a lightly brassed original black paint, and they wanted £1850 for that. I went for the black chrome, because it's a finish I like, and I also already had the 50 Summilux ASPH black chrome. I look at the current prices for old Leica M film cameras, and it's astonishing. Part of me wishes I'd gone for the black paint M4, because the prices of those have gone absolutely stratospheric, and are likely to continue on that upward trajectory. But then, it's academic if you're never going to sell the thing. Even the black chrome I bought, those are now selling retail for £4K plus. You can't even get a beater silver chrome M2 or M3 for under a grand now. It's crazy. Edited November 19, 2023 by colint544
Advertisement Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 Hi colint544, Take a look here I love my M4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.noctilux Posted November 19, 2023 Share #702 Posted November 19, 2023 (edited) Time changes everything. My first M4 acquired so long ago was for photographing, I even forgot how cheap/expensive it was. I was very proud by then untill I traded M4 for M5/M6 ( don't remember well ! ) for inbuilt meter. Now I keep two black M4 non use, just because I can . Strange. Edited November 19, 2023 by a.noctilux
a.noctilux Posted November 19, 2023 Share #703 Posted November 19, 2023 (edited) forgot this link out of topic, M6 was better when the lighting is tricky with slide. Now it would be different. Edited November 19, 2023 by a.noctilux
Mr.Prime Posted November 21, 2023 Share #704 Posted November 21, 2023 I love the classic look of my M4 silver. The new M6 doesn't have the engraving, nor the MP and the M6 is only available in black and for me, the iconic Leica is silver finish. I believe the MA is the closest relative to the M4 these days if you can live with the lack of rewind crank.

Borna Posted November 22, 2023 Share #706 Posted November 22, 2023 Very interesting, a quite rare Black Paint Leica M4 - seemingly never being used before popped up for sale on renowned Swedish pawnshop site today for auction. https://www.pantbanken.se/auktioner/visa-auktionsvara/?f_id=1086236&fritext=leica&product_category=&product_sub_category=&pris_min=&pris_max=&length=20&offset=0&kontor=&sortering=&listposition=1 It is a thing of beauty. analogue pete Posted January 26, 2024 Share #711 Posted January 26, 2024 Got a little carried away with the launch of the new Phoenix from Harman and while I was in Downtown Camera, I broke down and bought the Doomo cold shoe light meter for the M4. Weather in TO has been soooooo grey and gloomy...praying for better weather to go out and take some pics.
a.noctilux Posted February 8, 2024 Share #712 Posted February 8, 2024 This articulated wind-on lever is so comforttable, the only "thing" I regret on M4, after using the other hyped later M with solid wind-on lever.

a.noctilux Posted March 14, 2024 Share #720 Posted March 14, 2024 In my decades use of Leica, I must admit that M4 feeling, smooth yet solid in use, not other Leica can compete. With careful use, this is one of Leica M to begin with and can last very long. I have some "less" confidence in the original eyelets (replaced more than once in my multiple M4s). The articulated wind-on lever, I don't know why it's so large (reduced in later Ms), but now I see the solid feeling as " solid design".
