Rolo Posted January 22, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Alexandre showed some superb images of the cliffs at Etretat. It reminded me of several images that I've taken of the spot he shot his pics from. Here is one that I've converted from the colour original and although I'm not especially happy with the result and work on it from time to time, here it is. I presume he took his from the cliff on the left. I'll use one of his images to show where I was (hope you have no objection Alexandre). Rolo
Advertisement Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Hi Rolo, Take a look here Etretat - The Return. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Rolo Posted January 22, 2007 Author Share #2 Posted January 22, 2007 I parked my motorcycle in the church car park at the top and trundled down to the location shown with bag and tripod. Had to keep a hand on thetripod at all times as a fall was undesirable More than a bit precarious I can tell you ! The walk back up was a struggle in the dark too. :-) Good holiday that was. Rona!d Posted January 22, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 22, 2007 Rolo, dreamlike, i like your converted b&w´s. The water tilts to the right side. Are you unhappy with the rendition of the cliff?
Rolo Posted January 22, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted January 22, 2007 Ron, Thanks, Here's a copy of the scan. The light was very low and the trannie isn't as crisp as I'd like. My original visualisation was of a B&W shape and not a detailed image. You can see I have the material to bring much more detail in, but I don't think it adds to the print especially and it doesn't portray my feeling at the time. It was one ominous place inthe dark. The tilt is present on this version, but there's a shadow running below ythe horison that might be making it appear worse than it is. Vital to keep the ship on the horizon. Like I said above, I posted it in response to Alexandre's fine work. It isn't finished because I always leave it disatisfied. Maybe one day I'll get back to it. Rona!d Posted January 22, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 22, 2007 Rolo, this is a very good expample how B&W and darkrooming (though digital) works. Thank you very much for posting the original. I think we both agree, that b&w is the way in this case You got the best out of it, with a corrected tilt this would hang in my hall p.s. You are from England, right? No need to correct the tilt, i have learned from my visits that the pictures always hang a little tilted in english living rooms - must be this seafaring-nation-thing

lxtc Posted January 22, 2007 Share #7 Posted January 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is a wonderful pic Rolo, reminds me how I used to feel Etretat as a kid. Frightening and fascinating at the same time.
stuny Posted January 22, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 22, 2007 Rolo - I must have been rushed earlier today and failed to post my comment, which I recall typing. The B&W is rife with mystery and portent. The color is coldly beautiful.
