Yes the batteries are the same, just like the rest of the camera. But it has been noted that some (most or all) aftermarket batteries for both these camera do not have a certian chip inside them that the originals have so you lose the battery indicator on the LCD screen.

But there hasn't been any report of these aftermarket batteries damaging the cameras.

Ed, that's interesting. I had asked a couple times and hadn't seen an answer.

Do you remember where you saw that the Leica and Panasonic batteries will both work either camera?

And I didn't know the difference was the battery-level reporting, either. Was that here on the forum?

I just knew that each company claimed that its camera would work only with its own battery, but hadn't seen any comparisons.

Good information! Thanks!

jj, that looks as if it should work. B&H has always seemed to do pretty good research on its products. Cheap enough, right? Give it a try and let us know of any problems! :)

And thanks for the heads-up!

I recommend to buy the original batteries from Panasonic or Leica (Panasonic is more cheap, but is the same type then Leica).

You do not often buy a battery, normally it is only necessary to buy a 2nd one. Why buy a camera for 700 Euro and then looking for the most cheap battery on the market? I say this because Ihad the experience that a battery exploded in my multi loader unit during my holiday vacation in a hotel room at night while loading. Sure the multi charger unit was the reason I think but that night I loaded also a cheaper battery (was a brand name but not original from the camera brand).

So my advice: do not buy these NoNames.

Yeah, I think you are right. The D-Lux 5 and LX 5's small differences should not have any impact regarding batteries. Who knows, maybe the 3rd party battery would not even register correctly with the charger. I just ordered the Panasonic EVF for my D-Lux 5 as the only difference between the brands are name and cost. Appears the same with the batteries so I'll get a Panasonic one and forget the 3rd party stuff.

Howard the cameras are the same. The only real difference is the name on it. Since the cameras are the same the batteries are the same. Yes I have read this on another forum and about the aftermarket batteries.

Personally I have not bought a extra battery for the LX5. I'm finding the battery, at least the one I have, lasts a long time. I've used the camera for days, maybe not that many shots (100-200), with flash, review, chimping and have never run the battery down lower then 2 bars.

I just pop the battery in the charger every couple, 3-4 sometimes, days.

Howard, Shootist,

I own both cameras, D LUX 5 & LUX 5, and the batteries are the same.

That being said, despite the claims NEITHER battery will EVER get 400 pictures in one charging. Have had both cameras for quite some time now, and have fully re-chared all batteries several times. Shooting in .JPG, I only get just at 100 pictures per charge.

Even have kept written notes regarding the charge time, how many pictures per charge.

Both Leica and Panasonic statements are bogus regarding the 400 pics per.

Purchased both from B&H so they were not after market.

For the first time in years of using only Leica's, I feel let down on these claims. They are all 1250mAh batteries.

cdr, I'm getting off subject here and I hope all will forgive me. But, since you own and have extensive experience with both the LX 5 and D-Lux 5, I can't resist asking. Now, I have owned both the FX37 and C-Lux 3 (kissing cousins) and found differences between the two that, in my opinion, favor the Leica. All things considered, i.e., easy of use of menu, construction, comfort of use (I use Leica's grip on my D-Lux 5 and find it more comfortable to use by far), IQ, software, firmware,or any other thing you may have an opinion on...do you find a difference between using the two cameras? Thanks

jjonsalt,

In one simple answer, I used the LUX5 then after testing both, gave the Panasonic to a friend. I prefer the D LUX 5 above and beyond the other , also using the grip.

I have joked with B&H and friends, that the Leica is a great camera, BUT why didn't they see

the lack of a grip? It is a tiny little camera. perhaps only for small girls or men with small hands. You really need the grip!

I have just done a small test after reading your above post earlier today. So far today I have taken 205 images. Some with flash, JPG only and JPG+RW2, reviewed the images on the camera, adjusted the menus several times, formatted the card 3 times (after I had downloaded images to my computer), used the timer, zoomed in/out multiple times, used it at low shutter speeds activating the OIS, adjusted ISO up/down multiple times, set flash comp from 0>-2 and back again, adjusted the aperture (aperture+shutter speed in P mode using the wheel after pressing the shutter button half way) multiple times, Used the Macro setting multiple times and the focus assist light for most of those and other shots, turned the camera on/off multiple times, and some of these images were shot outside in the cold. The battery indicator is still reading 3 bars (IE Full) and I don't remember the last time I charged the battery, I think it was last week sometime (I've been laid up with a bad back since last Tuesday and today was my first real day out. Yes in the cold and snow and icy roads here in Hot Atlanta).

Now most of these shots were around my house, shot one right after the other but not all of them.

So it seems that either both your batteries are bad or both your chargers are bad or both your cameras have the same flaw draining the batteries way before they should.

Or I just have the best battery in the world for this model camera.

May I ask you why you liked the Leica version more then the Panasonic.

they are the same camera. That has clearly been stated by Stefan Danial.

I don't think it's so much as not seeing the need for a grip as it is to seeing the need of a more substantial grip option. The larger grip itself along with the added camera height gives me a much better hold and control than the grip that is "built-in" on the LX 5.

David,

I respectfully disagree. I'm not a girl and I have large hands but I prefer the DL5 without a grip. I'm glad that Leica didn't build a grip in because it means that I have the option to use it without a grip, which I wouldn't have with the LX5.

Of course! But -I guess- you write this as a negative critic to Leica? I think it is good so I as the customer can decide what I want. I I think 70 EUR is not worth the price - ok. If not, I buy. Better like that, then building in a grip (which is sure cheaper!) but not wanted by anyone wo use the cam.

The capacity of batteries are fixed. But here many people write they can take 400 photos, others say they take only 100-200 photos with the same brand battery. My experience is I take about 250-300 photos after I loaded the battery 3-4 times. So also it depends if one uses zoom, flash, maybe also the size of image is a topic, I do not know. If one switch off the cam after taking one photo or only after has taken 10 photosor so or how long the "sleep time" is set in setup makes also a big difference. Because the powering up and down also consumes energy. So if a battery has 10 percent higher capacity, there is a good chance to get 10 percent more photos - when using same condition compared to the lower capacity battery. Anything else to compare is not useful.
