bman Posted January 3, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted January 3, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, my X1 is in for repair last Saturday. As reported by some other members, the flash refuses to lock-in securely, and pops up and stays up despite a few tries. Will report how long it would take for repair. The camera was never dropped or mishandled, in fact barely used since purchased last 6 months (since I bought an M9 a month after).
Advertisement Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Hi bman, Take a look here Flash no longer locks-in. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tom0511 Posted January 3, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted January 3, 2011 Mine just came back from repair for the same issue and flash lock feels solid now. Took about 3 weeks. Cheers, Tom
h00ligan Posted January 3, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted January 3, 2011 My lens assembly was replaced in two weeks (plus shipping time). Fwiw. Much faster than I thought.
bman Posted January 4, 2011 Author Share #4  Posted January 4, 2011 Mine just came back from repair for the same issue and flash lock feels solid now. Took about 3 weeks.Cheers, Tom  When you mentioned "feels solid", do you mean that it wasn't earlier? Did Leica change the design or material for the parts that makes it better or more secure? I asked these question because I could not recall how it feels before the problem occur. Hopefully I could provide some feedback when I receive my X1 back from the dealer.  Thanks anyway for the feedback on time taken for the repair. Its approaching 1 week, and counting. Allnm Posted January 30, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted January 30, 2011 A month? thats a long time, where did you send it? Also, did you keep it in a case? Just wondered because some cases are very tight and I wonder if the case presses on the flash unit and damages the locking mechanism. Allan
bman Posted January 30, 2011 Author Share #7 Â Posted January 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sent it back to the AD I bought it from. Last I checked, they have sent it to the service centre. I usually carry it in either the Leica own leather case for X1, or if with my M9, in a Billingham bag made for Leica. I doubt that would be a reason. But I do keep the X1 most of the time in a dry cabinet (30-40%RH). Don't know and don't think that the locking mechanism could have been effected, unless it's not mechanical.
donalrey Posted January 30, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted January 30, 2011 i had the same problem so i sent it back to willoughby's (where i purchased the camera). i was told that if i sent it to leica myself it will be quicker (around 3 weeks) and if i had willoughby's send it, it will take longer. since i was already there i had them send it. 6 weeks later i got my camera back but not after i had to pay $250!!!!!! for the repair which i thought the warranty would cover. Â question to those that got their fixed, did they charge you for the repair? Â thanks.
h00ligan Posted January 30, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted January 30, 2011 So they speculated you caused the damage then? Â Another user just pm'd me on dpreview with the same issue but there was some minor physical damage to the bottom plate apparently..their quote was $1300, which makes me wonder how much damage was there. Apparently the flash, lens assembly, and bottom plate had to be replaced. Â Delicate, hope I don't drop mine or something!
phancj Posted January 31, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted January 31, 2011 I dropped my X1 twice. Both times luckily I was sitting, so the fall was about 2-3 ft. First time the corner of bottom plate had a small dent no big deal, second time worse I broke the lenscap (but luckily not the lens!!) and had to pay $30 or so for it what a ripoff. Â Dont think the X1 is particularly fragile, just not like a film M.

They've screwed me before too. I don't trust them. If Leica charged you, I would ask for my money back since every X1 is clarly under warranty. donalrey Posted February 1, 2011 Share #12 Â Posted February 1, 2011 Yes it was my mistake well learned taking the camera back to Willoughby's. I have e-mailed Leica to see if that warranted a $250 repair. We'll see what they say.
Allnm Posted February 2, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted February 2, 2011 If it was damaged rather than wear and tear, surely the Leica Passport should cover it if it was only 6 months old? Allan
h00ligan Posted February 3, 2011 Share #14 Â Posted February 3, 2011 Leica Passport is not available in all countries, afaik - at least the accidental damage portion. We don't get accident coverage in the USA.
shinglj Posted February 7, 2011 Share #15 Â Posted February 7, 2011 Well my black X1's flash started popping up when I took the brand new camera out of the packaging ten days ago . At first it did lock down for a while after being pushed down a few times but over the weekend it gave up on even this modest effort so the camera is now in the post on its way back to the Australian importer's nominated repairer . I am pretty disappointed with it on many issues but I believe it is totally unacceptable for any company to ship a camera which is faulty when it leaves the factory but particularly Leica with their brand name and premium pricing . As far as I am concerned they should ditch the fancy packaging and invest in more effective quality control . I'd prefer it to be wrapped in newspaper and working than the current situation . The few images I have taken with the camera have been superb see Heatwave and Australia Day posts on The Rolling Road but on the current performance I have serious doubts as to whether I will be keeping it after it is repaired . bman Posted February 7, 2011 Author Share #16 Â Posted February 7, 2011 Its either poor quality control, or no quality. I expected a more robust mechanism. I am still waiting for the repair, a month has passed, no news yet.

jorismichielsen Posted February 9, 2011 Share #18 Â Posted February 9, 2011 You should not have been charged... looks like Willoughbys screwed you. They've screwed me before too. I don't trust them. If Leica charged you, I would ask for my money back since every X1 is clarly under warranty. Â They will always charge you for such repairs. Once I went to my dealer because my flash was not popping-up anymore. I had a big discussion with the dealer because he accused me that I dropped the camera, which I did not. The X1 was only 2 months old and had always been or in my hands or in the protection case. Seemingly the flash was blocked by the top plate. Â Anyway, the dealer gave me a choice, or he could try to fix it by pushing the top plate (which he did and the camera works fine now), or he could send it back to Leica Solms for repair. Problem with the latter option is that (1) if Leica gets such a camera for repair, they will fix every single damage and fault so the bill could be very high, and (2) the inner side of the camera is built in such a way that even if I did not dropped the camera, but gently bombed it against my chest some mechanic sensors are activated so that they can see that it is not a failure of fabrication but a customer caused damage. At least they charge you and say that the damage is caused by you. Â So do not always blame the dealer. In first instance I was also angry with him, but he saved me a lot of money and waiting time. Of course it is another story is the dealer sold you a returned X1.
