I've been experimenting with the basics; Tri-X and D-76.

If we judge the quality of photos shown in this media that were made with film compared to digital, I'm afraid we would find an awful lot of really crappy film images. Even the technically better films do not translate well through the migration necessary to put them here.

It's downright embarrassing to compare film to digital here. Just making a film image has no virtue when put here: most suck from composition to decomposition to digital.

I am not sure if we were to "find" images or post our own? I will post my own, it is easier for me. Here goes:

1st is Tri-X

2nd is Efke 25

3rd is Kodak NC 400

4th is Ektar 100

Thanks great idea!

Eric

I find this thread most useful, but it would be even more useful if the processing chemicals (B/W) and the solution were mentioned alongside the film type used. I believe it makes a huge difference?

I agree, my shots appear different than other photos posted but with the same film. Although I am new to film, I still have not produced one image I find sharp and crisp, even when shooting with FP4. Are my photos over-developed or what? HP5 and Illfosol.

I tried Ilfosol years ago and didn't like it.

I have settled on HC110 Dil-B now (for Tri-X), or Paterson FX-39 for Pan F+ and I am very happy with the results from both.

As an aside, I hope that someone picks up HC110 when Kodak go t-u.

Are you scanning negatives or prints?

I read somewhere that Ilfosol is practically the same as HC110.

Anyway, I use HC110 (Dil-H) solely for all my films as I´m too timid to experiment.

Andy: Do you recommend any special times for HC110/Tri-X combo?

By the way, I read that APX 100 (in 35mm format, at least) is back from the dead. Were you aware of that?
Well, supposed to be coming back. The chat is that ADOX Premium Pan 100 will be APX 100.

These two are APX 100 developed in Xtol and scanned with a Konica Minolta DS IV using VueScan:

Tri-X was processed in D76 1:1 9:50' development normal agitation 68 degrees.

Efke was processed Rodinal 30:100 1 hour stand development agitation at 30 min. 68 degrees.

Adox 20 requires a specialist brew Adotech. It is similar to the old Kodak Technical Pan but does not have the biased red sensitivity of Tech Pan.

I dont hear many others using ilfolsol.

This is Legacy Pro 100 (Acros) with Ilfosol3. This was the first home developing I'd done for nearly 30 years and I was very pleased with it. I fancied something with a bit more grain and contrast so I've started using TriX and HP5+ in D76.
