Olsen Posted January 3, 2011 Share #21 Posted January 3, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Marginals means a lot in low temperatures. Note the lack of ice around the front 1st floor window; the kitchen of our dacha, the only room I had managed to heat up to 18 - 20 degrees C plus indoor. The rest of the house had an indoor temp of less than 10 degrees C plus. This marginal difference can be seen on the outside... Well clad, the sensation of minus 10 or 20 degrees C isn't that much. But minus 30 - 40 degrees C is felt as something far colder. At 30 - 40 degrees C temperatures it is difficult to breath and bare skin turns first pale than blue, within minutes. Cars won't start if they have been stayed outdoor and the steering wheel is hard to push around, due to stiff lubricants etc. Simple mechanical/electrical items won't work or is frozen stiff. Like locks and doorbell buttons. Film will break in old film cameras. Nor would I trust old oil lubricated shutters to work reliably. I drove from Narvik, Norway to Luleå, Sweden one late night in minus 42 C. The steering was so heavy that it was like steering a boat. Even though the defroster was turned to max the windows froze on the inside. I regularly had to scrape off the ice on the inside of the windshield during this eight hour long car drive. I stopped once to make a leak, an unforgettable experience.... Not the least since I had problems locking the car door afterwards. The latch was frozen. Had to heat it up with a lighter. Advertisement Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Hi Olsen, Take a look here M9 in cold weather. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Mauribix Posted January 3, 2011 Share #22 Posted January 3, 2011 Just back from another 7days shooting in -20/-18° weather, without problems. I just had issues with a single battery (even when fully charged), but it was not a camera's fault (and the battery was original but 3years old for professional use). Both my M9 never had problems with extremely low temperatures, my record is -28° without trouble then. Anyway my 5D mkII did not show any problem too, to be honest. For the record: I don't use any kind of case, I don't keep the camera inside any pocket, nor coat or jacket. I simply hang it on my shoulder, take it always switched on, and shoot when I need. I seldom switch the camera off to preserve some charge. (anyway 4 batteries in my pockets are more than enough to shoot all day long). Ciao.
Olsen Posted January 19, 2011 Share #23 Posted January 19, 2011 We have freezing temperatures here in Oslo, which is normal for this time of the year. I took a stroll around town with my 'new' M9 with my old 35 mm 2,0 Cron. So nice to have full fram again. It was about minus 5 - 6 degrees C. A shot from Akerselva, the river that devides Oslo in two, and the harbour. The ship you see is one of the 11 Hurtigruten ships touring up and down the Norwegian Coast all year around. An excellent photo holliday. More info here: Cruise Norway, Antarctica cruise, Travel Norway Antarctica. Hurtigruten Welcome, dear visitor!
