MPJMP Posted December 27, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now that I've decided not to get the leather case and simply carry the D-LUX 5 with the neck strap, I'd ike to invest in a good quality screen protector. Something better than just a cut down iPhone screen cover. Glass seems like the way to go, and I've heard mention of Giottos and GGS. Any opinions as to which is better? Which specific model am I looking for for the DL5/LX5? Any other advice? Thanks, Mike
Advertisement Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 Hi MPJMP, Take a look here Screen Protector for D-LUX 5. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted December 27, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 27, 2010 Mike, I have no suggestions on screen protectors for the D-Lux 5 but you should be aware that the thickness of some screen protectors is enough to prevent the EVF from pushing all the way home into the hot shoe, which will stop the EVF from working. Pete.
jjonsalt Posted December 27, 2010 Share #3 Posted December 27, 2010 I use Giotto's SP8300. I placed it with the hot shoe cap in place and it fits just fine. It is 5mm thick and may prevent the EVF from seating fully (and thus not making complete contact and work) . I don't know this this to be a fact, I have asked around on this forum and never received a reply. Might be something to consider.
MPJMP Posted December 27, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted December 27, 2010 Thanks for the head's up on the EVF. 5mm is pretty thick. I'm not sure if I will ever invest in the EVF, but of course I want something that would be compatible just in case I ever change my mind. I read some reviews on the GGS. Looks like it is a more precise fit for the DL5/LX5 screen, but there are many complaints of excess glare. The price is about 1/3rd that of the Giotto's. I don't know if that is a reflection on realtive quality/construction between the two. I may just give the Giotto's a try (in stock at B&H) and if not satisfied try a GGS somewhere. farnz Posted December 27, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 27, 2010 Ivor at Red Dot Cameras told me about this problem and was talking to a protective screen manufacturer to have some made with slots for the EVF to fit into. He felt that it would be easy enough to simply cut a slot in an Anybrand screen protector but then there'd be a slot without adhesive that could allow moisture or dust to get between the screen and protector so Ivor had asked the screen manufacturer to manufacture one with a slot with adhesive. I don't know how Ivor got on but he returns from holiday on 17th January. Pete.
jjonsalt Posted December 27, 2010 Share #6 Posted December 27, 2010 First, sorry the (.) didn't get in place with my earlier post. The Giotto is .5 mm thick, not 5 mm. I assure you that once a Giotto protector is applied there is no turning back, it would break (crack) and probability scratch the screen. I read too many complaints about the GGS to even consider one, it just doesn't have the coatings to reduce glare that the Giotto does. My gosh, you paid for a Lieca and and are taking into account that an inferior protector would save a few dollars? I really would like to have an EVF but need to know if it would work first. Haha! 0.5mm is much more reasonable than 5.0mm. I was envisioning this huge chunk of glass stuck to the back of a small compact. And what do you mean by "no turning back?" Are you saying that once it's installed you can't take it off or that taking it off might damage the camera? Granted, once it's on I probably won't need to remove it, but I'd hate to think I'd just made a "permanent" addition.
jjonsalt Posted December 27, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 27, 2010 I don't lnow of a safe way to remove one. I sure wouldn't want to try.
richfx Posted December 27, 2010 Share #9 Posted December 27, 2010 Giottos Aegis screen protectors can be safely removed with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive (don't use too much heat). I have one on my M9 and it is excellent. Popped off once (fortunately, it fell onto a bed) and I reapplied it, again with a hairdryer to soften / activate the adhesive. Otherwise no problems. Does the 8300 also fit the D-Lux 4's screen? Rich

jleicadlux5 Posted December 31, 2010 Share #12 Posted December 31, 2010 I emailed Giottos to ask if they had a screen to fit the D-LUX 5, this is their reply: Dear John, Thank you very much for your support Giotto’s products. Digitom Posted January 1, 2011 Share #13 Posted January 1, 2011 A question in general: why not a plastic fol protector? I use cheap nonames on my Digilux 2 and D-Lux 5 and never get a problem. When - after some time of useage, the foil slips of at the side, I change it. The foil can be easily removed withour hairdryer or other helping aids. The view on the screen is not disturbed, and my EVF works fine. So the foil protects as well as a glass I see no disadvantages against the foil. any other opinions? MPJMP Posted January 3, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted January 3, 2011 Update: I ordered the Giottos 8300 and it arrived today. I did not take it out of the packet, but used the handy template that slides out to determine how it would fit my D-LUX 5 screen. Hmmm... It does not appear as though it is going to be a very precise fit and will leave a bit of screen obscured while some remaining screen exposed. In practice it's probably not that noticeable, but in any case I will pass and send it back. Having read dozens of complaints about the GGS screens being highly reflcetive, I think I will avoid those, too. Any other ideas? Am I back to cutting down cheap iPhone film protectors? Guest user62134 Posted January 4, 2011 Share #15 Posted January 4, 2011 Found the Giotto at B&H in 3" screen and after it arrived and I placed it on wrong it came off and I replaced in correctly and it works great. Used the cloth to clean. Hell it is only $25 and well worth it. What I cannot figure out is: Who keeps putting their finger prints on the screen? Moi' ! Fit' s just fine. BTW: I have pulled it off several times without a hair dryer or surgery !
Bill Allsopp Posted January 4, 2011 Share #16 Posted January 4, 2011 I have heard it suggested that an iPhone screen protector can be cut to size and used. No personal experience though.

I use Vikuta by 3M, imported from Germany. I got the highest quality version and it works and fits perfectly. Do a search on the forum; there have been several threads in different sections. I use one on my M-digitals and X1 in addition to the D-Lux 5.

macjim Posted May 15, 2011 Share #20 Posted May 15, 2011 I bought a PDA screen protector kit in Jessops for £5. Just needed cutting to size and careful application and it works just fine. No need to pay a fortune. Cheers, Macjim.
