Was invited for supper to my friend Joe tonight (he celebrated his 84th this month) I took this picture of him with the M8, Aspheric Summicron 35 F2. Lighting was a table lamp to his left hand side and the fill was from surrounding lights in the room.

ISO 650

Shutter at 1/30 handheld

I think this is wonderful and who said you need complicated lighting to produce a great portait. The only thing I'm not too keen on is the shiny, curly material behind his head (unless its the hair of a gorgeous blonde sitting next to him, hmmm I wonder?)

Jacques -

A lovley portrait, beautifully lighted with fine tonal range and framing. I assume the shiny, curly material is a decorative fabric lain across the back of the couch on which he is seated. I do not find it objectionable.

Same evening at the diner table...... lighting was from the ceiling lamp.... photoshop for burning in different places..... If you have a fairly steady hand ( I do brace myself against talbes, walls, armrest etc) and a fast lens..... you can leave your flash home and use the enviroment lighting!

Thank you Malcolm

My friend had a very interesting life..... he was the chief accounting for a major food company and he traveled around the world to supervise the installation of the computer system for there distribution in supply. Never boring to spend an evening with Joe!
