kdriceman Posted May 14, 2011 Share #21 Posted May 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been using the personal hotspot on my iPhone as my 3G wireless for my iPad and Macbook Pro. For those with that service available (mine is Verizon - US), there is no longer a need for internal 3G capability (IMO). Based on my experience with my Macbook Air, the more you ask it to do, the hotter it runs and the slower it gets. Perhaps the new version will manage heat better, but I'm happy with my current arrangement... iPad to view shots on the go, MacBook Pro back at the hotel, iMac in the house. Advertisement Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Hi kdriceman, Take a look here Leica M9 and the MacBook Air - Perfect Partners?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jager Posted May 14, 2011 Share #22 Posted May 14, 2011 Nice review, Mike. And I completely agree with your conclusions. For those who didn't read Mikes' review, he's not suggesting the 11" MBA as a primary image editing tool, but rather as something that could be used on occasion, when carrying a larger/more powerful computer would be difficult or inconvenient. In that context, I couldn't agree more. If I'm going somewhere where heavy duty image editing is required, I'll take along my 15" MacBook Pro. But for light, incidental editing, the 11" MBA is an outstanding tool. I have mine loaded with CS5, LR3, and Nik Silver Efex Pro and it runs all those just fine. And the 11" MBA is small and light enough that it essentially "disappears" from a travel hassle standpoint - the first notebook I've ever owned that manages that feat. I'll be heading off on a six-day motorcycle trip with some buddies next week. My 11" MBA will be the travel mate for my M9. I'll do the real image editing when I get home. But the little MBA will be fine for both storing images and doing quick edits - for blog postings, for instance - while I'm on the road.

I agree that if you have a device, like your cell phone, that can provide a personal hotspot, it works great. But, I've never had my little Air run hot. Is your's the old model by chance? But, I've never had my little Air run hot. Is your's the old model by chance? Yeah, it was an older one. I loved the MBAir, but when I got an iPad I found it much more mobile for most of my needs. It isn't good for editing, but I was never happy with my MBAir's Photoshop performance anyway. So I sold it and got a MBPro 13 which is a bit heavier, but does everything I want. I use the iPad to view and temporarily backup my photos and I travel with it a lot and edit when I get home.
abrewer Posted June 1, 2011 Share #25 Posted June 1, 2011 Yeah, it was an older one. I loved the MBAir, but when I got an iPad I found it much more mobile for most of my needs. Same here I need that CD/DVD drive too Transfer files back and forth with PhotoSync to the iPad This is a really slick combination for real-world photographic editing and viewing I can be tweaking the images at the desk and wife 3 feet away looking at them on the iPad as I work, on something bigger than a phone screen and without looking over my shoulder at the files before I'm ready for someone to see them My personal bent is netbooks (including the Air) work a whole lot better for creating, editing, and reading text documents than they do photographs
pico Posted June 21, 2011 Share #26 Posted June 21, 2011 We have a 13" Air at home and while I was surprised to find it adequately fast to use Adobe 5.5, I do better work on the pro tower and 30" screen at work. So, I'm in a pinch now that I won't have the pro rather soon. To the gentleman who has 16gb in his - I tried that and performance actually slowed slightly. Watching memory, I found that I never used more than 8gb, so it was a waste of resources.
Paul Reading Posted June 22, 2011 Share #27 Posted June 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) New Airs are due soon and I hope they will release a 15" version. I am sure they will. Apple has signalled that they believe optical media is dead and all their software is being sold via the App Store from now on/ So if you follow that logic I expect all their laptops to become optical drive less. They will also migrate to solid state drives and I do not rule out 3/4G either now they have the experience in 1Pads. So to conclude I expect the following:- 11,13,15" Macbook Pro/Airs With SD slots and no optical drives Backlit keyboards (the omission was a mistake and done to extend battery life) ...and hope for 3/4g sim card built in so that I don't have to use a USB pen. I already have an Air but if the new machines are as above I will upgrade.
JMacD Posted June 22, 2011 Share #28 Posted June 22, 2011 I too just picked up the 15" air hint.
Ruhayat Posted June 23, 2011 Share #29 Posted June 23, 2011 I think if one is a photographer and not a photoshopgrapher then the small Macbook Air is a perfect travel companion. I carry mine all the time, as the shape, size and weight makes it easy to slip into the back pocket of my bag as if it were just a manila envelope stuffed with some paper. It's that light and thin. Most of the time I don't even feel it's there. As a consequence, I carry the Mac Air with me significantly more than I used to with my previous Mac lappies including the 12-inch Powerbook which was my previous fave Mac laptop of all time - and I have owned every model since the 1998 Wallstreet. I take the Mac Air along with the current digital camera I have whenever I get outstation assignments, where I am usually the art director and backup photog. It's great for quick touchups, which is all you need really if the photog has nailed the exposure and composition during the shoot itself. But maybe I'm just old school that way. sparkie Posted June 23, 2011 Share #30 Posted June 23, 2011 i'm seriously tempted by the 11 MBA, but is lacks the SD card reader. The 13" has it, so if only the 11" had it. New MBA's going to be released soon. Maybe will include it. Then again 13" has a little more screen real estate which can be very handy and practical

I agree with almost everything except the part of photoshop. I run LR, PS and Niks on my maxed specs 11 MBA and no probs. I once tried composing an ad with 11 layers or so and it was a big billboard and it was slow ( not masochistic but the MBA was the only comp with me and I urgently needed to compose the ad), but for photoshopping photos and other stuff the little thing is pretty nifty. This issue may be moot once the i3 or i5 MBA starts surfacing soon... CJ
kdriceman Posted June 26, 2011 Share #32 Posted June 26, 2011 What hard drive options will come with the new MBA's?
Ecaton Posted June 26, 2011 Share #33 Posted June 26, 2011 I agree. But, why not dream of on internal 3G/4G? No thanks, I prefer to carry a seperate and unlocked Mifi which I can use with local sim cards and data plans wherever I travel to.
StephenPatterson Posted June 27, 2011 Share #34 Posted June 27, 2011 i'm seriously tempted by the 11 MBA, but is lacks the SD card reader. The 13" has it, so if only the 11" had it. New MBA's going to be released soon. Maybe will include it. Then again 13" has a little more screen real estate which can be very handy and practical I would not expect an SD card reader on the 11", just a somewhat faster processor and perhaps a new Thunderbolt port. For me the size and weight of the 11" MBA make it the perfect travel companion. It's screen is big enough to do simple edits, and the battery life, although not as good as the 13" model, is more than adequate. Lightroom 3 runs nice and fast, although I do notice that Silver Efex Pro 2 slows down just a little. For me it's all about traveling light and fast, and serious edit jobs just wait until I get on my 27" iMac.
kdriceman Posted July 28, 2011 Share #35 Posted July 28, 2011 I had to help my college daughter upgrade her Macbook white... Sooooo, I gave her my 9 month old Macbook Pro and I got the new 13" Macbook Air with the i7 processor. It is incredible. It processes heavy-duty Photoshop tasks faster than my relatively new Macbook Pro (which I had upgraded with an SSD) while weighing in at less than half the weight of my beloved Pro. The 13" also has a built in SD card reader, Lion OSX, Thunderbolt interface and a beautiful 13" screen. I am on record earlier in this thread by downplaying the MBA for M9 files. But that was the one I owned from 2009. This new version is powerful enough to crunch the big M9 DNG files with ease.
Adarsha Posted August 3, 2011 Share #36 Posted August 3, 2011 I have an iMac at home and a Macbook Pro 13 inch which fits neatly with ALL my camera kit - Leica M9, M7, three lenses, spare battery, etc. - into a beautiful classy Billingham shoulder bag. Who could want a better portable kit? Aren't you just loving it!
albireo_double Posted August 4, 2011 Share #37 Posted August 4, 2011 I use the Macbook Air 13" as my traveling companion with the M9, with LR3 installed. It is just perfect for this purpose. In fact, the MBA has no problem processing/editing even much larger images from a Sinar 33MP digiback.
algrove Posted August 10, 2011 Share #38 Posted August 10, 2011 USING THE 11" IS BETTER THAN HAVING MY iPAD ON A LONG 3 MONTH TRIP LIKE I AM ON RIGHT NOW. SURE I NEED A GPS FOR THE 4000 MILES I HAVE LOGGED SO FAR, BUT FOR REVIEW OF M9 FILES WHY ASK FOR MORE. I USE DOUBLE 1TB BACKUP DEVICES PLUS A SDD 500GB BACKUP AS A THIRD BACKUP FOR REALLY SERIOUS STUFF. WHO CARES ABOUT THE CARD READER, JUST USE A SANDISK USB READER. IT'S SMALL AND IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE APPLE CARD READER FOR THE iPAD. ANY SCREEN IS BETTER FOR EVENING REVIEW RATHER THAN THE M9 SCREEN. ALTHOUGH DURING THE DAY I LIKE THE HOODMAN FOR BEST REVIEW. OF COURSE WE ALL USE BIG SCREENS AT HOME, BUT IF YOU NEED ONE I HAVE FOUND THAT LEICA "PRO" SHOPS IN EUROPE WILL LET YOU REVIEW MEMORY CARDS FOR NO CHARGE IF YOU ARE NICE TO THEM THEN THEY ARE NICE BACK. SOME EVEN LET YOU USE 30" SCREENS FOR REVIEW ON MAC PROS.
