Advertisement Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Hi johnkuo, Take a look here Death Valley Sand Dunes. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
erl Posted July 12, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 12, 2006 Nice image and tones John. One of my favourite subjects when I can get to them! Cheers, Erl
wbesz Posted July 12, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 12, 2006 Beautiful scene, captured well.
starwatcher Posted July 12, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 12, 2006 this scene cries for large format, but well done (I know a photographer who would have ordered a lorry to carry a huge stone into the foreground ). If possible I would try to work out the sky/cloud structures a little bit. best - Klaus

stunsworth Posted July 12, 2006 Share #6 Posted July 12, 2006 Excellent! Works very, very well in b&w. Thankfully you didn't go for the 'rock in the foreground' composition :-). That's as much of a cliche as the use of Velvia is in colour shots. Both have been done to death IMHO. Every so ofton a shot comes along and I think 'I wish I'd taken that'. This is one of those. Thanks for sharing.
johnkuo Posted July 12, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted July 12, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks all for your comments. I wonder if it would be better if I used an orange/yellow filter. I have since acquired one and will experiment next time.
stunsworth Posted July 12, 2006 Share #8 Posted July 12, 2006 John, a yellow filter would darken the sky, but it would also lighten the sand (assuming the samd is yellow) so it would possibly need something else. Green maybe?
jmr Posted July 12, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 12, 2006 John, excellent composition and good graining in the sand. Wish I'd taken it.

wbesz Posted July 12, 2006 Share #11 Posted July 12, 2006 Thanks all for your comments. I wonder if it would be better if I used an orange/yellow filter. I have since acquired one and will experiment next time. Never mind now, but you can use photoshop to enhance the sky, and see if you like the results. I agree the image would balance better with a darker sky.
