Tablet use?

I have been intrigued lately by the Wacom Intuos4 tablets. Now seems to be a good time to buy as the price is lower at many sites. Are there any here who have used a pen tablet for photo adjustment and retouching? I don't anticipate that I will use it for anything else such as creative computer drawing. Is it a waste of money for my expected use?

Thank you,

It is convenient not essential. Selections can be easier to draw. Pressure-sensitivity adds some flexibility to retouching. What is important: that you get the right size (not too small), and that you use it for everything not just retouching or else you won't bother switching to it. I would recommend getting a mouse with the Intuos 4 so it will be there and ready all the time and you can switch between mouse and pen effortlessly - although I know some people (including a photographer) who use the pen exclusively for everything.

Get the medium size. Try Calumet if they still have refurb ones. Mine cost $250 and looks new.

If you want to burn/dodge or draw with accuracy, that is the way.

If you want to make selections, use the easy tools on the pallet or use the channels pallet and modify a dup of one of the channels. Calculations does the best selections by playing of the contrast of two channels.

I'm not sure which one I got, but it's sitting in some cabinet for months now. I'm just not much of a photoshopper and do everything with the mouse. Burning, dodging, cropping, removing a dust spot, enhancing tonality ... so where's the added value of that tablet?

So: not a waste of money if you're into enhanced post processing. But if you're like me and just don't need all that stuff ...

I have been using the wacom range of products for 9+ years now ever since we got introduced to the early models back in college and value their products a great deal. I am currently using an intuos4 and a cintiq in my studio on two separate workstations and am more than satisfied with their performance in every way. Although we primarlily used them for precision masking in the beginning, it`s found its way into many other apllications as well. Although some of the later addtions, i.e the customisable buttons and other tricks seem to be overkill even for the most hardenend tablet users, I rely on the flexibility of these tablets a great deal.

Only downside: My dog took a liking to the pens which have been replaced on a regular basis due to "chewing damage".
