The word from my excellent dealer is that the black X1 will not be available in Canada, and presumably North America, until the New Year. I am getting a loaner for my downed M9 and will wait. For me black is beautiful. Maybe they will even have the new firmware then, too.

Trade over!

Then someone gets a good deal on the actual prettier camera :)

I may eventually. I'd have to send mine to Leica for a new covering before I could sell it... and firmware 2.0 has to really make it faster before I'd waste my cash on an aesthetic upgrade.

Thanks to this wonderful international forum I ordered the last black from Robert White, and even with the shipping, it is a couple of hundred bucks cheaper than anything in North America. I should have it next week. It will be interesting to see how it measures up to the M9 -- some pictures posted here. Flickr: geoffreyjames82's Photostream

@FelixK - I`m sorry. I must have been the one on the phone half an hour before you arrived. According to Meister Camera I got the last one of their first shipment:)

Anyway, it just arrived at the doorstep and the very first impressions are:

(This is my second X1 - passed the first one on some time ago)

1. Black vulcanite is fantastic, great grip and is very similar to my M6.

2. Setting wheel for manual focus is much tighter. Very much tighter.

3. Setting weel for EV etc is tighter, but not so much as the MF wheel.

4. Aperture dial is much tighter.

5. Shutter speed dial is somewhat tighter.

6. Battery is charging, but I doubt I`ll seeing something else than firmware 1.0 when I switch the camera on.

Will report more later:)

I wonder if it will be possible to get the Vulcanite on the Grey X1 replaced with the new covering found on the Black X1 which certainly looks richer and has a better tactile grip. Particularly for those that had the peeling Vulcanite on the original X1s, it would be an interesting option to have it replaced with the new skin.

I've asked and Leica NJ said no. They just didn't have it available. I even said I'd pay for it.

That is probably true given that the Black X1 hasn't started to ship in the States yet. So It's not surprising that they don't have the "black" replacement skins just yet. But it's probably only a matter of time before the Black X1 skins start to peel and replacements will be needed. :-)

That will be the time to ask if we can change the skins on our original X1s! :-)

To the extent that the X1 pays homage to the old III series Leicas, the war-time IIIc camera came with a "shark skin" covering. Although the texture on the X1 is different, I immediately was reminded of that "gray" covering the first time I laid eyes on this newer camera.

Okay that was my two cents for this thread but I do have a question and was unable to find in answer in earlier posts:

Has anyone here found a good adhesive solution for this skin peeling problem? I used some 3m photo mounting adhesive (very lightly applied) a couple of weeks back and the problem is back. I can press the skin down and it stays for a couple of days and barely comes up but I would like to cure this ill once and for all while waiting for the newer vulcanite to become available.

I used LePage Contact cement when my X1 started to peel within a couple of weeks of purchase last March. It has held perfectly ever since.
