How much sharpening have you tried to add? Do you have any DNGs that you want to upload to Windows Skydrive? If so, I could take a look at them.

I'll get something up tomorrow evening..have to head to bed now for my leica academy M9 event tomorrow..yay :)

Edward,

I am quite certain you have a dud. Send it in to Leica. IF all else fails sell it to me for a song hahah. My wife has been hinting at my X1 for the longest time and I am undecided on the M9. Might as well get one more for her.:D

Possibly..here's the rub. I wanted to decide to keep or sell the x1 without registering, as the buyer could then register without penalty of losing warranty. I will put that dng on an FTP or something and post a link here..zipped for convenience. I have seen a few shots here that definitely make me wonder if I do have a dud..and many on fm. I will probably also talk to the leica guys tomorrow and show them a sample shot (taking the x1 with me). Mybe they can confirm if it's not normal.

Thanks for the friendly help to all, much appreciated.

Here is a sample I posted in another thread.

Possibly a problem with the focusing system? Had you tried to chek for error in focusing? Suche an extreme front focus or focusing far beyond infinity?

I had similar problems with some camera/lens combination.

Yes, it's pretty typical. What is strange is - I don't think it's motion blur/shake - and I don't think it's a front or back focus issue.

Over on FM, someone quite familiar with the x1 had a peek and also agrees something is just, off - but it's hard to place. The jpgs can cover up the issue somewhat with sharpening.

Thank you for taking the time Ed, much appreciated!

Edward, where were you focusing in that shot? It seems like all the signage should be much sharper.

My only thought on this particular photo is that the sun was so intense that the reflection off the signs caused them to lose some sharpness. The candy and fudge signs look especially washed out. If you drop the exposure slightly and bump up the Recovery slider and the Clarity slider while dropping the Contrast slider, it cleans it up a little bit, but in my photos the signs are usually very crisp.

My reason for thinking the sunlight is what caused the lack of sharpness on the signs is that the cactus off to the right of the steps seems pretty sharp.

Ii took a look at the picture in lr3. The highlights were blown on the signage at roof level and the whole thing looked overexposed because of brightness. Added some sharpening and the signs looked better.

Liked JeTexas I'm not sure the signs were in focus, the foreground seems better focused in and sharper in places.

Yes, focused on the signs iirc. It is possible I focused it manually to infinity, I'll double check. I am certin however I ws not focused on anything in front of the building on the left.

I'll take one more shot today with a known focus spot, lol..sorry I'd been shooting for 7 hours. I appreciate you all looking.

Isn't there a program, maybe dc capture pro 5 that can show the focus point? I miss that from canon's software (though that's about the only thing)

Sharpening can mask the issue, and that's what vie been resorting to, when sized down it does an ok job, but it's not a real fix.

I'll pop out now for a really simple shot to judge. Back in 10. Thanks for all the help.

Here are four more.. it's contrasty out again, shocker.. and 2 of the three of these have -ev applied... which then created more shadow noise.. anyway, they are named according to where I focused (the zips not the unzips, so have a look one at a time). I tried to keep the shutter speed up beyond what should be the threshold for shake. Anyway, these are literally walk outside, click click, click (there were other shots but these are the best examples), there wasn't any focus recompose - i moved the focus box if needed. AF was 1pointh.

I hope that answers all the questions - and again, my many thanks for all of your helping in sorting this out.

The only one of these three that doesn't seem to hold up to what I'd considerable acceptable sharpness is the Back Gate Focus.

What happens if you restage the back gate focus shot, but manually focus on the words of the sign between the gates? I'm trying to decide if the camera was just having trouble focusing on the skinny bars of the gates at that distance or if there's something wrong with it.

Hmm, that's interesting. Compared to other x1 shots, I don't feel like any of these holds up.. maybe I'm looking at it wrong - maybe it is the brightness as you stated.

I could try the back gate shot again as you suggest - but at that distance, it's going to focus at infinity.

I suppose it would be worthwhile to change to spot focus too. Thanks for all your time and assistance JeTexas

In the wooden door shot, you've got red fringing around the edges of the door frame and the roof tiles. I noticed a little of that along the edge of one of the signs in that first mining photo you posted.

I've never seen any red fringing like that in any of my shots.

I only use spot focus.

For the intense sun you have in so many of your shots, you really need a UV/polarizing filter. That would help quite a bit.

Yah, I posted about that in my little shoot out against the gf1 - when I shot my canon 7d. There was crazy fringing around the canon logo with the x1.

I'd send it in for service regarding the fringing. That's not normal.
