Is it worth using a screen protector,,, I was going to use a Giotto SP8300 (not a perfect fit but close) , I used them before on other cameras and liked it.

BUT

If the screen does not really need one I would not get one,,,,,,

At what type of cost would it be if you had to replace the screen on a d -lux 5....

thoughts

thanks

That foils one put on the screen are all the same IMHO. The only difference is the price. After some month of useage all the foils have to be changed, because e.g. when the cam hangs in front of your body the corners of the foils are going looser from the movement while the camera is hanging and you walk... I used cheap ones and expensive ones for my Digilux 2 screen and never see a difference. It is just a clear foil, so there can be no big difference beside the name printed on the package. So I buy the cheapest on I can get and I customize the size by myself. Works good.

Beware of applying a screen protector if you're planning to use the EVF because I know of one instance where the thickness of the screen protector prevented the EVF from slotting fully home, the contacts couldn't make contact and it wouldn't work.

I believe that Red Dot Cameras is developing a screen protector that has a slot for the EVF but still seals all around to prevent dust and moisture from intruding between the screen and the protector.

Pete.

Sure it is possible to use a protector which has a little less height so that the contact will not be touched. If not, anyone can customise a protector with perfect fitting himself, then to buy these expensive ones. That is really no problem with a sharp knive :D

I installed a Giotto SP8300 screen protector on my D-Lux 5. It fits fine and was installed while the hot shoe cap was in place so it comes off with no problem. Am I to understand that does not mean the EVF (either Leica or Panasonic) still may not work?

pick up a delkin 3.0 as it fits right over the giotto and is great for shooting and protects the screen even more when the camera is not in use. I like the combo......

Will the shade attach without having to use the plastic screen cover? I wouldn't want to put a cheap plastic screen over the Giotto.

yes, you can remove the cheap plastic screen from the Delkin,,,, works great

Thanks, then I'm getting one. I would still like to know if applying the Giotto with the hot shoe tab in place insures that the EVF would fit? Maybe someone could see if the length of the overhang is the same on both pieces.
