Is X1 Good Camera?

The short answer is yes.

 

The long winded answer is: Your question is very broad. X1 is a good camera for what? For taking casual snaps? For travel? Landscape? Or getting the best image quality in the smallest package at a nose bleeding price?

 

There are many good cameras out there. One person's good camera can be another one's nightmare.

Perhaps the best for all of these is a DSLR, but it is big and bulky, so here is where the X1 wins out. But it is slower to focus and less versatile with only one lens and angle of view.

 

So perhaps a small-sensor compact is the answer? But its smaller sensor will definitely result in more "noise" (reduced image quality( at higher ISOs in low light. Then again, a small sensor will result in more depth of field -- more in focus throughout the frame. Good or bad?

 

X1 best for ease of use? Yes and no. Easy to control apertures and shutter speeds by flipping the dials, but they move too freely.

 

Image quality? Yes, excellent. But, like any camera, there are always compromises.

You are saying the best for all is DSLR... How about M9? What is the best DSLR to compare with X1 same sensor and lens 24 mm f/2.8 (36mm)?

M series Leica is brilliant, and my favorite, no doubt. But it won't do sports or wildlife or close-ups (max focal length is 135mm, hard to do close-ups without specialized attachments). There are many DSLRs from all the main brands that can compare with the X1 (APS-C sensor, 35-36mm-equiv lens). DSLRs have a good name and are used professionally. There will be marginal differences in Image Quality. All will focus faster. All will be more versatile. All will be a LOT bulkier and bigger.

 

Then again, the main point of difference with Leica has always been "small camera, big pictures". For technical excellence, precision, and reliability, the Leica M especially is unequalled. It comes at a price, but will last for very long time. But M style photography does not suit everyone.

 

Once again, it all comes down to what you want to photograph, and what size camera you are prepared to take around with you. It's a case of "horses for courses". No one camera will do it all.

Sounds like an issue that requires exchange. It's an incredibly simple mechanism. Push down, it catches..if that doest work, you should seek an exchange from your dealer. Barring that contact leica. Dealer exchange will be much faster.

Current aspc dslr with a really good lens will win on pure iq I think..however, and this is a big however..for walking around (maybe not street photography) the x1 is 1/3 the weight or less with maybe a few % less iq.

 

This really is a difficult question.

 

Right now, try comparing the new Sony alpha and zeiss lens. Or canon t2i with l lens (heavy lenses)

 

I think you should be very clear with us about what you enjoy photographing..then we can better help you. Most people will use an x1 as part of their overall kit.

 

Comparing to the m9 is quite different. On price, sensor, lenses, focusing, etc.

Yes, I have X1, and I am happy with my X1. I have compared to Nikon D300, D700 and D7000 too, with Nikon good quality lenses, but I have never compare to Canon yet, because I don't have Canon. To my understand X1 still had better IQ compare to Nikon, It's maybe because the Leica lens. It would be more nicer if X1 has full format sensor. AF slow does not bother me, sometime I use manual focus. I don't do sport photography. I took some wedding and it's turn out nice, a little bit slower compare to Nikon DSLR, but X1 produced better IQ. I have post some of my photographs in this forum too. Thanks :)

Y'know, I have to say that there is faaaar too much time spent around here comparing and not enough spent shooting. When you go for a piss do you point it at the porcelain, or worry about what the big boys are waving...? :rolleyes:

If I were you, I would wait for the X 2. Some time ago I bought a D Lux 3 and few months affter the purchase, the D Lux 4 was launched as a better version of my camera. My advise: Never buy the first version of a new model. Wait for the second one. Many times, the great improvements are between the first model and the second one. Later improvements generaly aren`t too big, at least in the short time.

...... those that enjoy the traditional art of picture making and cameras may disagree here...................... take a walk with Panasonic GF1 to GF2 there are many unhappy serious snappers........... though the kids are alright about the changes. Just goes to show where the direction is for the camera producers as the cell phone/pad interfaces take stranglehold on what the consumer yearns for.
