M8.2 focusing

Hi all,

I just bought a pre-owned M8.2 and was wondering about the focusing box in the finder.

I used to own an M6ttl for several years and I don't remember the focusing patch being 'washed out'.

On the M8.2, under some lighting conditions, I find that it is a little washed out making it a little difficult for me to see it 'snapping' into focus. This is only maybe once in 10 times or so. Sometimes, this happens, and I remove it from my eye, put it back, and the problem isn't there anymore. I've also tried moving my eye about a little, to change the angle which I'm viewing the finder (as I remember the M6ttl sometimes being a little fussy in that dept), but it doesn't really make a difference.

So, I'm just wondering if I've got a problematic unit (not being as 'snappy' as the M6ttl), or my memory of the M6ttl isn't correct, or that my eyesight has just deteriorated as age catches up.

I can't/don't really want to send it in for a CLA where I live, as it'll either take them 3months to send it to Solms, or/and charge me an arm and a foot for waiting that long.

Thanks, all.

With my M8, I often feel that when I look into the finder at the wrong angle, the framelines and focusing patch get hard to see. Especially when holding it in portrait orientation. Might be a general M8(.2) thing. Sometimes I move the camera around my eye a bit, until sight is improved. Normally, it's an adjustment of approx. .1 degree of viewing angle or so ...

I have sometimes noticed this effect on my M8. It seems to be connected with how light is reflected from the subject and the centering of the eye in the viewfinder, so I guess it's a characteristic of the rangefinder/viewfinder unit rather than an individual fault. It doesn't actually interfere with focusing though.

What I find far more troublesome is that the right-hand verticals on the 50 and 75 frames tend to vanish immediately the eye moves even fractionally to left of centre. Strangely, it doesn't happen with either of the other pairs of frame lines.

Don't forget that the Diopter of the viewfinder is -0.5 as standard, so if your eyesight without glasses is different, then the RF Patch will appear fuzzy.

I try to shoot without glasses but the image is blurred, so have to wear them which is a pain as I can't see all the frameline, so have to 'hunt' around the viewfinder.

Best solution is a Diopter Corrector.

Thanks for the replies.

Early on, I found that my finger was the culprit, as was suggested Clook, but I have been more careful since.

I don't wear glasses so I don't think that's a contributing factor.

From everyone's replies, it would appear that perhaps I just need to reacquaint myself with an old-new friend. Re-adjust myself again to focusing with a rangefinder.

And if its just my eyes, then I'll just have to find a workaround to that problem. :)

Either way, thanks for the help!

p.s. now I have to deal with another problem - peeling vulcanite ...
