tommaso_tabet Posted November 6, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a little dilemma here. I recently stored my M6 and bought a second hand M8.2 and it is just amazing! With my wife, we also have a Nikon D40x, that we basically use for shooting the kids. She doesen't enjoy using the Leica (good for me!), so when around we end up carrying the M8.2, the Nikon plus a small old Lumix for short videos (...plus the 3 small children and their logistics...). Which is too much for my taste! So, I was thinking to get rid of the Nikon and the old Lumix, and buy the D-Lux 5. BUT: how many shoots of the running children will I miss with the dlux5? (Wife asked). Or in other words, is the 2010 D-Lux5 a sum of the "old" D40x plus Lumix or not? Help. Tom

Tom I am a professional photojournalist, Use mostly Nikon & Canon DSLR's with everything from a 10.5mm to 500mm. I recently purchased a DLUX-5 last week, and a LN LVF-2 finder and used it almost exclusively on a 10 day assignment at Kennedy Space Center NASA (I am part of the photo pool at NASA). The results were great and working for a wire service, I posted about 50 images from the DLUX-5 in the 10 days on the "wire". Yes, it is a great little camera. I only shoot RAW, by the way and use LR3 to do the RWL to DNG conversion for PS5.
Walt Calahan Posted November 6, 2010 Share #3 Posted November 6, 2010 And the Panasonic LX5 would save you lots of dough over buying a red dot.
girphoto Posted November 6, 2010 Share #4 Posted November 6, 2010 And the Panasonic LX5 would save you lots of dough over buying a red dot. That is true, but I also got LR3.2 with my RED dot and I like the idea of adding my own grip or just sliding it into my pocket without grip or finder when I need to. sbaruche Posted November 6, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 6, 2010 Is the LN-VF2 viewfinder is the olympus EVF and it works on the D-Lux 5 thanks Sylvain
lct Posted November 6, 2010 Share #6 Posted November 6, 2010 ... how many shoots of the running children will I miss with the dlux5? (Wife asked)... A lot i'm afraid. I would keep the Nikon. weisserriese Posted November 7, 2010 Share #7 Posted November 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is the LN-VF2 viewfinder is the olympus EVF and it works on the D-Lux 5 thanks Sylvain shure, the electronic viewfinder Olympus VF-2 works on the D-Lux 5? It have 1.44MP (Leica only 0.2MP). Is the hole resolution usable? Would be much better than the Leica LVF1. Regards Stefan
sbaruche Posted November 7, 2010 Share #8 Posted November 7, 2010 interesting as I was told by popflash photo that the olympus VF2 would not work on the D-lux 5 , obviously you have tried and it does work which is a great news thanks Sylvain
tcrown Posted November 8, 2010 Share #9 Posted November 8, 2010 Anyone considered using DL4 VF on DL5? I just can't stand using EVF since I am very much used to dSLR VF (which is optical).

Regards Stefan So you have a Olympus VF-2 and the data port on it is the same and in the same position as the one on the Panasonic/Leica EVF and you have mounted the Olympus on the DL5 and it works. Shootist Posted November 8, 2010 Share #12 Posted November 8, 2010 Is the LN-VF2 viewfinder is the olympus EVF and it works on the D-Lux 5 thanks Sylvain I read the reply to this quoted post as IT DOES work on the DL/LX5 but after posting over at DPR about this I was informed it doesn't. I guess the data port is different because the location seems about the same on the 2 different cameras but I guess the port itself is of a different style/type. Update: Some one @ DPR just posted pictures of the 2 different EVF's and yes the port are clearly different. Oh well.

Guest user62134 Posted November 9, 2010 Share #15 Posted November 9, 2010 As things in life happen__I purchased the DL5 for myself___my wife liked it so much she took it. I ordered another __plus the LX5 to compare. I find the two interchangeable. Yesterday I even cut out the Red Dot off a box and presented to my wife. We had a good laugh, but she knew the difference, darn it. The battery lasts longer in the LX5 and I have spares for both. Enjoying both the LX5 and DL5__now we know they are the same. When shooting video on the LX5, the zoom is slowwwww ! In RAW or .jpg well worth the money for either. But the LX5 as you know is 1/2 the cost of the DL5 ! Yes, I did tape over the names on both just to "fool" the idiots who are so name conscious. Save that extra $400. David
