Black spot on D-Lux 4

Dear all,

I have been using my D-Lux 4 recently in New York. I have seen a strange black spot in the top left hand side of both my lcd screen and several actual photographs (but not all, see example).

Is this just a dirty lens or is anything wrong with my sensor?

Thanks

Hong, it's not supposed to be there. Could be a number of things. Not a dirty lens, but could be a chip out of it--but you'd see that.

Maybe your finger or the strap or cap getting in the way. Could be something loose inside the lens--unusual, but possible. Maybe a diaphragm blade that has slipped out of position. Do you have any lens attachments--hood or filter, say?

You've got to try to figure out when it happens. Look at all the pictures that show it. Is it only in daylight, not at night? Is is more associated with smaller apertures, or more with larger ones? Is it always in exactly the same place, always just as unsharp, or does it sometimes look sharper and sometimes appear in a different place?

Is it only on horizontal shots, not on verticals? Only at 16:9 (quite possible if it's outside the field of view of 3:2 and 4:3)? Only at wide angle? More pronounced at telephoto?

Try pointing the camera down and seeing if it appears. Try pointing the camera up and see if it appears. Try shaking the camera to see if it goes away. Does it happen on verticals if you raise the right end, but not if you raise the left end? Try everything you can think of. It can't hurt, and if there's a pattern, it'll show up.

You say it appears on the LCD as well as on the image. Do you notice it before you take the picture, or just when you review the images?

Do some research yourself to see what you can narrow down. If there are differences (and you say some pictures don't have it, so there's at least some variation ;), show us the differences.

As Andy said, we can't tell anything from such a small post. I always resize so that the longest side is 900 pixels; the forum will handle up to 960 pixels, depending on other factors.

Enjoy New York! You'll be having all the fun, but together you and we can work the thing out. :)

The spot's fuzzy appearance suggests to me that it's dirt that's got onto your sensor. Even though the D-Lux 4 is a fixed lens camera and is *sealed*, the piston action of the zoom lens displaces air inside the camera and dust can get in through the tiny crevices between the lens parts. I recall seeing this once before with a Nikon p&s.

If it is dirt on the sensor it'll probably need to go to a qualified repairer to remove it.:(

Pete.

As I've said, sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not. Even in a series of consecutive pictures where I keep aperture steady at 2.0.

I will try and do some experiments as suggested, but I am afraid I will have to get it repaired.

Apparently Leica does not cover cleaning the camera under warranty..

Just took my camera to an official Leica service point. Probably dust on the sensor, as already suggested. Hope to get it back in two weeks. Meanwhile I can try out my 'new' Digilux 2...

I have seen the thread on the X1, that's why I thought of the same problem. Bit disappointed that Leica is experiencing these kind of problems but luckily I have three years warranty.
