NZDavid Posted November 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've noticed this dark spot appearing in portions of sky. What is it? A UFO? I've since cleaned the lens, not sure if it is flare or what. Just visible in first attached pic, second is a 500 pixel crop with auto-levels applied. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 Hi NZDavid, Take a look here Out damned spot!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
J_Thompson Posted November 1, 2010 Share #2 Posted November 1, 2010 Looks like you have some kind of foreign crud (that's a technical term) on your sensor. If you're shooting film, then I have no idea.
andybarton Posted November 1, 2010 Share #3 Posted November 1, 2010 It's a dust spot. You can either set Lightroom to automatically blend it out on every frame, or send the camera back to Leica for a service. Obviously, you can't clean an X1 sensor yourself. Highly unusual, I'd say. NZDavid Posted November 1, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted November 1, 2010 Thanks, I wondered if it was a dust spot. Ugh! Only seems to show up in some conditions. And I thought having a fixed lens would prevent this kind of thing...
phancj Posted November 1, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 1, 2010 Thanks, I wondered if it was a dust spot. Ugh! Only seems to show up in some conditions. And I thought having a fixed lens would prevent this kind of thing... Dust on sensor will show up only at smaller apertures....

Dan States Posted November 1, 2010 Share #7 Posted November 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) That's the first time I've seen dirt on an X1 sensor. Sorry for the bad news...I had a Canon S90 with multiple dirt chunks right out of the box. I'm sure Leica will be able to get it fixed in short order. RockyIII Posted November 1, 2010 Share #8 Posted November 1, 2010 Bummer. I hope this is the exception rather than the rule. So far, no dust spots with my X1. Maybe if you set the camera down on a Dust Snapper mat, it will magically suck the speck of dust away from the sensor. VisibleDust - Product Page Yeah, right. earleygallery Posted November 1, 2010 Share #9 Posted November 1, 2010 As I've said before (search my previous posts if you wish) a major problem with the motorised lens design of the X1 is that it will - over time- inevitably force dust through the lens assembly onto the sensor. Congratulations on being the first person to report dust on their X1 sensor! Fortunately if your camera is still under warranty Leica may remove it for free. Guest malland Posted November 2, 2010 Share #10 Posted November 2, 2010 A...Congratulations on being the first person to report dust on their X1 sensor! Fortunately if your camera is still under warranty Leica may remove it for free."May" remove it? It would seem to me that they would have to do so, or replace the camera, since it is still under warranty. I bought an early Ricoh GXR/A12 (50mm EFOV), that either developed a dust spot or may have had it from the beginning: Ricoh replaced the A12 lens/sensor unit immediately through their importer in Bangkok, which is where I was at the time. To be fair, I have not seen a report on such a problem with any other GXR lens-sensor units, so this could have been a production problem on early unit. —Mitch/Paris Paris au rythme de Basquiat (WIP)
NZDavid Posted November 2, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted November 2, 2010 Thanks all, I shall do a few more tests to see if it is still misbehaving and then take it in. Perhaps I should get an M9 instead...
NZDavid Posted November 2, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted November 2, 2010 Well, that didn't take too long and no need to post more pictures. I aimed the X1 at the clear evening sky. As phancj said, no problems at wider apertures but when I stopped down the spot appeared on the LCD as well as appearing on screen. In it goes. NZDavid Posted November 2, 2010 Author Share #14 Posted November 2, 2010 maybe that's what caused it in the first place!
h00ligan Posted November 2, 2010 Share #15 Posted November 2, 2010 How long have you had the device? That's very unfortunate. I live in a very dusty environment and haven't seen it. I clean most of my gear with a computer duster compressor (like canned air but infinite) and it occurred to me the other day that maybe I shouldn't do that with the x1 since it could force dust in that couldn't be removed later. JuanjoF Posted November 2, 2010 Share #16 Posted November 2, 2010 David, you're not the only X1 user in this forum with this kind of problem. The sensor of my X1 has dust too. You can see two! spots in this picture. I'm obsessive looking after my gear and I feel panic imaging Leica opening my X1. I think I’ll leave it as is. What a bad luck. http://www.puntodecomunicacion.es/dust/l1101794.jpg http://www.puntodecomunicacion.es/dust/dot-1.jpg http://www.puntodecomunicacion.es/dust/dot-2.jpg
NZDavid Posted November 3, 2010 Author Share #17 Posted November 3, 2010 Edward, the camera was new in April. I believe in using cameras not treating them like boutique objects, but give them good care. I take them to the beach, up mountains, into the bush. Our environment can be very windy, but the X1 has been treated to nothing as extreme as the M6 has been through, for example. JuanjoF, I think the dust spoils the pictures and needs removing. A pain to have to do it in software all the time. My X1 has now gone back to Leica.
