X1 firmware update

grober, somewhere around march apparently.

As for the replies in your thread ... don't worry about they are from people in a much more deprived mental state than the average Leica user. It seems like most of them can only show off their wittiness (if you want to call it that at least) in some forum. Shouldn't look for answers here my friend, just occupied by a bunch of poor s*ds always looking how and where they can make their point, obviously thinking they have one.

have fun and enjoy yourself with the X1

Jan, why do you say march? Did they make another announcement? If so I missed it...last I read was November.

On an aside it's nice not to see firmwear in the title...which always makes me think of underarmor or spandex bike shorts :D

The semi-official statement at photokina was that a firmware update might be due near the end of the year, which I would take to mean December rather than November. Taking into account the usual slippage it might turn out to be January or February.

You don’t have to ask – nobody really knows anyway and rest assured: once it’s there you will hear about it soon enough.

Ok, I heard from a friend... who spoke to someone who may be in the know about this firmware update (I know this sounds like BS, but... ) that it actually does speed up the autofocus to "usable." Now, I'm not saying that I heard it is super fast, but I've heard that it is a hell of a lot better than now. I also heard that Sean Reid has one with the updated firmware and is testing it. This is all rumor, but perhaps it could be true.

I thought this too but I don't think Leica are at CES.

I emailed Solms about X1 firmware and autofocus late last year and received a reply confirming that they were working on a firmware update that included improvements to autofocus. Their plan for 'roll-out' is for early this year.

My offer of being a beta tester was also declined (all the testing had been done apparently).

It's hard to know what they mean by early this year but it seems to be on its way..

Here is the reply I got from Leica USA. Hope this helps.

Dear Sir,

I was able to confirm that the Leica factory in Germany is looking to address the speed of the AF in a future firmware upgrade. The next upgrade is not expected until sometime in the new year, perhaps by the end of the winter. Keep in mind that purchasing a camera at the same time does not guarantee the new version is already loaded but users can do the upgrade themselves at home.

Best regards,

Mark Brady

The X1 will be irrevalent by the time they release the firmware update... ;)

I'll bet the X1 never becomes irrelevant, because nobody will have the guts to produce a camera with its image quality in a package that small. People can argue viewfinders all they want to, but that is literally(!) a peripheral issue. Look at one more example - the Minox circa 1950's to 1960's had the sharpest lens ever made for a consumer camera, and with Agepe FF film could produce amazing prints up to 11 x 14 inches. And still, despite all digital progress, there is no high quality digital camera that small.
