michali Posted October 17, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) M9 & 50mm Summilux I have just returned from a month-long safari in East and Southern Africa. The highlight of my safari and without exaggeration one of the highlights of my life so far, was Mahale Mountains National Park in Tanzania on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. This national park is home to one of the largest remaining wild chimpanzee populations in Africa, numbering approximately 1, 000 animals. We hiked for 2 days into the mountainous jungle terrain to track and eventually locate a group of chimpanzees. We observed these chimpanzees from a fairly short distance 7 to 10 meters, who were totally oblivious to or presence. I followed one of the older females in the group as she fed off wild figs, and then observed her catching and eating ants off the trunk of a tree closely watched by other members of her group. Thanks for viewing.

pauledell Posted October 18, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 18, 2010 Mike, A fine series. You must have a great dialog with these creatures, they seem to consider you as part of their family the way they pose for you. Paul

stuny Posted October 18, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 18, 2010 Mike - These are superb, and to catch them on the ground with people around is somewhat unusual. We were lucky enough to see many in Uganda, both at an island for orphans as well as in the wild in a national park.
MEB Posted October 18, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 18, 2010 Mike, A wonderful series! I'm envious of your excursion and the chance to see these beautiful animals in the wild. Your photos are crystal clear and capture their lives in a way that really shows their personalities. Mark Blumer
