craig stanton Posted October 16, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted October 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) After sending my lovely M9 to a so called "expert" to have the sensor cleaned, the sensor now shows scratches on it. The "expert" said he just cleaned it and any scratches were there before he started!!!! (Imagine my response) Anyway. only a small portion of one of the scratches shows up on any pictures, just where the nice bright sky normally is!!!! Help, what can i do??? Sill in passport but does this cover it???
Advertisement Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Hi craig stanton, Take a look here Scratched sensor. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hoppyman Posted October 16, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted October 16, 2010 OUCH! Are you certain that there are not just drying streaks? Â I thought that the Passport warranties did cover any accidental damages??? We don't have that coverage here and I am not an expert. Â I have one friend who had corrosion (from sweat/saltair) inside his UK purchased M8 and it was covered Best of good fortune to you getting this resolved! craig stanton Posted October 16, 2010 Author Share #3 Â Posted October 16, 2010 Definately not drying streaks and definately is a scratch. Fine scratches all over it but this one (viewed with a loupe) is quite an obvious "gouge" Wish i hadnt bothered and stuck to editing the dirt out!!!! Tom M Posted October 17, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted October 17, 2010 After sending my lovely M9 to a so called "expert" to have the sensor cleaned, the sensor now shows scratches on it. (Imagine my response)Anyway. only a small portion of one of the scratches shows up on any pictures, just where the nice bright sky normally is!!!! Help, what can i do??? Sill in passport but does this cover it??? Â Please advise, whether this was an authorized Leica dealer. I made a mess of trying to wet clean the sensor on my D700 which Nikon Service professionally restored for only twice the cost of the supplies of my attempt. I take this as a lesson for a prospective cleaning of the sensor of my M9. Fortunately, so far the Rocket Blower and just leaving the Summilux 35mm ASPH (<2010) on the camera have sufficed, even on a trip to Iceland and the volcanic dust that penetrated under my eyelids and my teeth. Fantastic scenery that does justice to the M9, though. Â T.
craig stanton Posted October 17, 2010 Author Share #5 Â Posted October 17, 2010 This wasnt a Leica dealer, it was my local camera shop. Maybe i would be better off telling i did it!!!!!
chris_tribble Posted October 17, 2010 Share #6 Â Posted October 17, 2010 My understanding of the UK passport is that it does cover accidental damage (I dropped an M8 and the RF was fixed under passport - I'm also aware of someone who left a new lens on the top of a car and then drove off. The lens was then hit by another car. It was replaced ). In your position I'd report it as damaged and ask for service under the passport without going into major explanations. Â General comment to anyone reading this. Â 1/ cleaning digital camera sensors is not difficult to do. 2/ the Visible Dust brush based system seems to have a very good track record (and minimises any risk of damage if used correctly) 3/ my experience is only to use wet systems / swabs / pads etc in the most extreme cases. A brush tends not to force things into a surface. A pad can. Â Hope you can get this sorted out.
craig stanton Posted October 17, 2010 Author Share #7 Â Posted October 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks Chris!! how i am going to explain that one i dont know!! Do i take it back to the shop i bought it or ring Milton Keynes??
250swb Posted October 17, 2010 Share #8 Â Posted October 17, 2010 Well I'd clean it again, myself, because I would be unconvinced that the sensor glass is going to be scratched so easily by dust and normal cleaning even by a moron at a camera shop (why do people give their precious camera's to these people when all they do is what you could do so much more carefully?). As Chris says, its easy to do, and just may remove the 'scratches'. It has to be better trying than the default position of losing your camera for eight weeks at Solms. craig stanton Posted October 17, 2010 Author Share #9 Â Posted October 17, 2010 Thanks Steve I did try cleaning again last night to no avail. Definately scratched!!!! Sent it to the shop cos off to Hong Kong and Thialand in 2 weeks and wanted it good for that!!! Will do it myself in the future!!!
chris_tribble Posted October 17, 2010 Share #10 Â Posted October 17, 2010 I'd be surprised if you'll get it back in 2 weeks - especially if there's a parts shortage. In your situation I'd contact Leica direct via Service at Milton Keyne's + contacting Andrea Frankl in Solms (cs(at)leica-camera.com). She's very good news in my experience. Â Good luck! gravastar Posted October 17, 2010 Share #12 Â Posted October 17, 2010 You may find the scratch is less noticeable if you don't stop your lenses down too far, use f4 and not f8 or f11 for example. That's assuming you don't need the depth of field. It's worth experimenting to see if there's an optimum working aperture. Â Bob.
craig stanton Posted October 17, 2010 Author Share #13 Â Posted October 17, 2010 Thanks bob Tried all that. No problems at F1 with the noct, can see it at 5.6 with the 21mm but blurred. Will be ok till i get back from hols, have to concentrate on the noct or remove post if i need the DOF.!!!!

If someone had been damaging my camera I would have him pay for it. What else is there to do? Obviously you have pictures taken with the camera before the cleaning attempt to prove the scratches weren’t there before, don’t you?
RobertW Posted October 17, 2010 Share #15  Posted October 17, 2010 Albeit a bit late, in future try the Copperhill tutorial if u haven't used a wet method in cleaning sensors before. It frequently takes more than 1 attempt, back when I had a Canon 300D (?) many years ago. My first time took 4 tries as I had difficulty figuring out that the dust was upside down (actually makes sense) from where it appeared in the picture.  Subsequently you'll find it no big deal.  Here's a link for info...  Copper Hill Images - CCD/CMOS Cleaning Tutorial - Introduction  Hope everything is covered under ur passport. craig stanton Posted October 17, 2010 Author Share #16 Â Posted October 17, 2010 Trying to get someone to pay for his mistakes, unfortunately, is easier said than done. To take him to court to pay for the fault would cost me more than the camera and would be a complete waste of time. He wont admit it was his fault so thats the only option open to me. Its easier to sort the problem myself!!!! Lesson learned by me, clean it myself from now on!!!!
bybrett Posted October 17, 2010 Share #17 Â Posted October 17, 2010 Craig it should be easy enough to argue your case. The shop will have Public Liability and should have Professional Indemnity. Ask for their insurance details and say that you will submit the details for a claim - it won't cost you anything. You can prove that the scratch was not there with previous image files. Also you can argue that the shop should have informed you of any existing damage to the glass before cleaning it to protect themselves. Bear in mind that this is not accidental damage and may not be covered on Passport. Cheers.
gravastar Posted October 17, 2010 Share #18 Â Posted October 17, 2010 ...............................To take him to court to pay for the fault would cost me more than the camera and would be a complete waste of time............................ Â Small Claims Court can handle this type of case (compensation for faulty services provided) without involving solicitor costs unless you decide to employ one. The loser has to pay court costs.
