cliffp Posted October 15, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 15, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) A bit of white paint fell out of one of the numerals on the distance scale of my almost brand new 50mm 'lux. Assuming that nobody would suggest sending it off for repair, has anybody found a suitable type of paint to touch it up with? (I imagine others have been in a similar situation)
Advertisement Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Hi cliffp, Take a look here Lens marking paint fell out. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted October 15, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 15, 2010 Since you are in the UK, use Humbrol modeller's paint, matt probably best and the finest (that is, thinnest) artists brush you can find.
alexmann Posted October 15, 2010 Share #3 Posted October 15, 2010 I think I would think about sending it off for repair. What if it keeps happening to other numerals (they are all done at the same time after all) - you'll end up with a lens with possibly void warranty all covered in wobbly paint. Do talk to your dealer first. That would be my advice:) Regards Alex
marknorton Posted October 15, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 15, 2010 Alex is probably right, it may be they didn't de-grease the part before painting the numbers or something. Whatever the cause is, it should happen on a £2000+ lens.
250swb Posted October 15, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 15, 2010 This is what you need to fill in the engraving WHITE-RED-BLACK-YELLOW Paint Stick fills-in GLOCK slide on eBay (end time 10-Nov-10 23:25:29 GMT) a white paint stick. Humbrol enamel goes yellow over time. Steve
earleygallery Posted October 15, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 15, 2010 If it was an older lens I'd leave it be, or repaint as suggested if it really bothered me (do you use the distance scale?). But if the lens is new and under warranty then I'd definately return it.
SJP Posted October 15, 2010 Share #7 Posted October 15, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica lens painting is done by hand by women (only I believe) that are also not allowed to drink coffee to prevent shake/tremor. If you do it yourself you may have a hard time getting a decent result & paint may get infused in the anodised black Aluminium => impossible to remove. cliffp Posted October 15, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted October 15, 2010 Thanks everybody - I will return it.
cliffp Posted October 15, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted October 15, 2010 I contacted Leica Mayfair today and they are arranging collection by UPS (at their expense no doubt). I was very impressed by their organisation and helpfulness.
