leicamann Posted July 11, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) R8/ R 560mm Telyt F6.8/ Fuji 400 NPZ S( the new film) etc..still experiencing "compression issues..when I come down to the final image for the web it ends up really noisy and suffers from some werid pixel smushing. Of course the image could be cropped a thousand ways( ands I am sure there will be 1000 recommendations, I decided to leave a trace of Dad's home, thats my choice..I am not interested in a "slick photographers/magazine photo" . The Similkameen Bluebird Conservation Project was started back in the 90's, the bluebird population has rebounded strongly, but increasing encroachment from ( large vinyard production and housing) are still a threat. As I've stated before these birds are extremely shy, this shot took 4 rolls of film and 4hrs of pure waiting. Cheers, JRM

stuny Posted July 11, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 11, 2006 John - We've not seen enough of you of late, but this one was worth the wait (yours and ours) for its subject, color, focus, bokey and framing

smithies Posted July 11, 2006 Share #7 Posted July 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Usual quality, usual excellence we've come to expect from you, John. Can I ask, are you still convinced that all the effort with scanning from film still surpasses the best of digitation? I've given up film, mind you- I'm old and knackered! leicamann Posted July 12, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted July 12, 2006 Thank you all. I will try Silverfast and also scanning RAW to see if I can get better quality "web friendly" scans. Cheers, JRM
imported_peter_m Posted July 12, 2006 Share #12 Posted July 12, 2006 Nice shot John, I got quit a few of them around the yard got my own "housing project" on the go. Appears my numbers are down from last year only got 4 nesting boxes full with bluebirds compared to six last year. Scanning seams to be somewhat of a learning curve, I seam to end up with extra background noise as well. Peter
leicamann Posted July 13, 2006 Author Share #13 Posted July 13, 2006 Thanks Peter..where do you live..this bird species is only indigenous to this part of the world..so which "bluebird" are you talking about? I have run "into a brick wall" again with scanning issues..the prints look nothing like the scans.... so I am stuck..looks like I might have to re- install all the software and OS again... I was getting great results for many months and now this..... One thing would be really nice if software developers got their act together and produced pure 64 bit drivers...I can state for a fact that the quality scans would be stunning..why can't they move beyond 32 bit? Thanks, JRM
starwatcher Posted July 13, 2006 Share #14 Posted July 13, 2006 John, not sure what to admire more, the picture or your patience. Simply wonderful! best - Klaus
leicamann Posted July 13, 2006 Author Share #15 Posted July 13, 2006 Klaus... Now if only I could get the scans to look like the prints!!! Yes....its best to be quiet..I had my bag of Dutch Doppel Salz licorice with me:) Thanks for your input Cheers, JRM
imported_peter_m Posted July 13, 2006 Share #16 Posted July 13, 2006 John, I am up north from you, Mc Leese Lake, we got the same species around western bluebird. I been getting nice scans from supiria but the last scans I did where from NPS and I end up with a lot of noise, have to just hack away at it and see if I can fine tune the settings. You can always smoothen things out with noise removal but it would be nice to get the scans smooth right from the scanner. Peter
leicamann Posted July 13, 2006 Author Share #17 Posted July 13, 2006 Ok..yeah..there is a very strong population there... so how far North in the Cariboo do they travel?.... keep track of them.... I submit my observations to these guys.. http://www.bcbluebirds.org/ Cheers, JRM
imported_peter_m Posted July 13, 2006 Share #18 Posted July 13, 2006 They make it as far as Quesnel for sure and when I was out in Alexis creek we had them there as well. I am not sure if they get as far as Prince George. Peter
