jsrockit Posted October 12, 2010 Share #43 Posted October 12, 2010 It might blow away the X1 to value conscious folks, but Leica is probably talking about rich people...

Photojazz Posted October 15, 2010 Share #46 Posted October 15, 2010 Re the Fuji, So, decades of German camera building, doesn't mean anything over a primarily film known brand from Japan? The Leica lens tradition means nothing? Just because a package looks good, doesn't mean the contents are "all that". The jury is out on that, isn't it? I really hate overhyped stuff, let it get out, and find it's place in the market, and then we'll see. But so what if the Fuji is all that to some? IT still won't mean the X1 won't take great shots in it's place and put smiles on some people's faces for images that will last a lifetime, if properly saved and backed up. I listened to all the Canon hype for years, while we struggled a little bit in the Nikon camp, but now look at Nikon, it's "All that" in it's arena. It's a different game, and I won't mention that further here. But that still doesn't mean there aren't tons of satisfied canon users, there are, great! Doug Doug, There are leica-bashers aplenty in this forum, in case you havent noticed... There'll be some justification to this sport of Leica-bashing irregardless of which camera gets launched, they're all better than anything Leica.. Something about the Red Dot being a prominent target, I think:D or its just too luxurious for some and they cant stand others enjoying it...sad... Photojazz Posted October 16, 2010 Share #48 Posted October 16, 2010 Points Taken, any nice product it seems always becomes a target. Well, we have all seen our share of product bashing, true enough. The Fuji looks nice enough, but that doesn't mean it has the balls to back it up. The X1 isn't perfect, but can it PURRR when it gets the right opportunity. I make no bones about it, someday I want an X9 or equiv whenever that may be. But for now, I wlil enjoy the X1 along with my other gear, and use it in it's proper nitch. To heck with what anyone else has, that's my motto.
h00ligan Posted October 16, 2010 Share #49 Posted October 16, 2010 The bottom line is very simple: the fuji doesn't exist. Until it does I wish people would stop recommending it. It may be the greatest thing ever..a cheaaap m9/35mm replacement. ... Or it may totally suck. In reality it will be somewhere between those I'd think. contaxgary Posted October 17, 2010 Share #50 Posted October 17, 2010 Not only doesn't the Fuji 'exist', but Leica has until March to announce an X2. They don't need to come out with it for another six months, but simply announcing a camera with good specs will keep many waiting to buy a small digital. So, look for an X2 announcement in the first quarter of next year.

So, look for an X2 announcement in the first quarter of next year. Frankly Gary I doubt an X2 is coming soon,my gut feeling tells me that the fuji will not be that great in IQ, and most were focused (pun unintended) on its viewfinder. When the X1 was launched, the key point was small size and great IQ. For Fuji they even dropped the small size so thats one more point against it, for me at least. For that size I can start looking at smaller full featured interchangeable DSLRs which when coupled with good lenses may trump the X1 as well. The guys at Solms is probably resting on their laurels right now. And yes, IMO the X100 IS advertising for the X1. By adopting the "X" and having the same formula they are essentially drawing on comparisons with the X1, and bringing attention to it. Quite frankly if I didnt know of the X1 and this gets announced, I will then know and since I am in the market to buy a small compact with great IQ and no real need for VF in a camera this size my preference would then be towards the X1. I honestly feel Fuji should have named their camera differently and not draw inferences as it cheapens them to the realm of copycats, and lack of originality is a big no-no for many. Leica, with its brand name and the first X1 is looking good really, not that I care for the brand, but they are looking good.

My gut feeling is that it will have excellent image quality - based on Fuji's digital SLRs and lenses, but of course we all need to wait to see some actual examples from a production model. As for size, add a viewfinder and handgrip and lens tube to the X1 and you have a bigger and less convenient package than the X100, which is the nearest thing I've seen yet to a digital version of the good old traditional 35mm compact camera, which people on this forum have been asking Leica to make for many years. Gut feeling is based on the general obscurity of fuji's past offerings, at least here in Asia. Market share is dismal for such a large and well-established company. Also, there was not much emphasis on IQ and none of actual images, just a lot of hype on retro styling, Vf, etc. I respect you gut feeling, but believe in mine own haha... Like I said, only my opinion that for a compact (which the X1 is) the lack of VF is no dealbreaker for me, and works well even in bright sunlight. I need a VF on my DSLR though. If you up the size of the X1 I wont buy it, might as well buy a smaller DSLR and allow for interchangeable lens, faster AF, etc, etc. What I am stressing is the delicate balance of features/IQ/size and individual needs differ. I merely stated mine. I think many forget the X1 is just a compact, read Leica's website to see which class of camera it belongs. To me the fuji is way too big for what it does, and I honestly believe that its VF is too small to have so many readouts and info in it. Like I said, just a gut feeling, nothing concrete. But a strong gut feeling.... For a camera like the X100, it is too bulky to not have interchangeable lens and an even bigger VF for it to be comfortable. IMHO. I'll buy a smaller full-featured DSLR for that price.
