SD Card Readers

I bought a relatively inexpensive card reader, SanDisk MobileMate SD+. When I connect to my computer, the reader shows the jpeg files but not the DNG files. Do I need to get a more expensive card reader or is something else going on. I can transfer the DNG files directly to the computer from the camera (M8) using the USB hookup. But I have read on the forum that this is not advised. I am using a SanDisk Ultra II 2 gb SD card and I am tranferring the files to an iMac.

Thanks in advance. And thanks for all the great information on this forum.

I have had the same problem with a 2GB San Disk Extreme III card. I have send the card

to Solms but they could not find anything wrong. The only difference was they used a PC and I used a Mac. I forgot to tell that I have tried 3 different types of card-reader but none of them was working. Now I use Lexar cards and everything is fine.

Probably not related to the card reader at all, nor to the card. But rather the software you're using that ignores the DNGs. If you can browse the dircetory on the card from your computer's operating shell you should be able to see the DNG and JPEG files. On a winows box you'll see a removeble drive that is the card reader. On a mac I beleive it comes up in finder somewhere.

Sorry to say but you will not see anything. The Mac didn't even register the card.

I use the same card and works just fine on my Mac (Intel iMac, system 10.4.8).

I believe your problem is in the software you are using to open the files. I use a Mac and usually use Nikon View to download (all my digital files)with a Sandisk Reader. Nikon View will not see my wifes Lumix RAW files but they are there. Try using Adobe Photoshop Bridge and make sure you have the latest version Raw Plugin 3.6. I don't have an M8 yet but I think that version should open your DNG files but checking the Adobe site would answere the question.

I am using a Sandisk ImageMate + 12 for this purpose, but I do not use any software to move the images. This and other USB 2 devices are very fast.

I always move my image files as my first task -- using file services in windoze.

As my first task, I create a directory for the shoot (or use a directory that applies) and place the jpegs in a subdirectory in the target directory. For this purpose I use an external disk.

I then make selections and discard images that don't pass muster.

The remaining images are then copied to a second external disk and an offsite disk, using the program Second Copy. This is inexpensive software and it understands that only new and changed files need to be backed up.

When all 3 copies exist I reformat the SD card.

Because I don't use any software for this purpose, I can see both the DNG's and the JPG's.

Thanks for the responses. I was using "Image Capture" to download to the iMac. This procedure was missing the DNG files for some reason. So on the advice above, I used "Finder" and was able to see the DNG files and move them to a file or desktop or where ever I wanted them on the iMac.

I have a SanDisk ImageMate +5 and a SanDisk Extreme III 2GB card, and for some reason, the reader cannot see the card at all. It worked with a blue SanDisk card, and the Extreme III card works in the M8. Highly frustrating.

That is my problem: the reader cannot see the card. I don't have the oportunity to move the files, I cannot see them anywhere. If I connect the camera to the Mac via USB everything is fine.

My card works fine in the camera. I bought from a reputable dealer in Germany where I have bought many before, so I really doubt it is not a real SanDisk card.

This discussion is not very helpful. As I told yesterday the (2) cards have been in Solms for testing, they work well with a PC but there are these difficulties with the MAC.

They are real Sandisk cards, bought at a pro's shop here in Hamburg.

Can I suggest the following decision process?

read what's on the cards with the file utility of your OS (Finder for Mac, Windows Explorer for PC) if the DNG's and JPG's are both there, the camera and the reader are in the clear.

Now use your downloading program of choice, and report what it is if you post results. If it doesn't see the DNG's and does see the JPG's, there's the problem. Until a really good, personalizable file downloader for dng's appears (and maybe Breeze-Browser is already) stay with step 1, as it will do what you need.

OK, I think there was a mistake in my descrption: I first used a Sandisk card with the M8 and wrote only DNG files on it. The files were visible on the camera but I was not able to make them visible on the Mac. The card reader didn't appear on the desktop. Now I connected the camera directley to the Mac and I could upload the files. Now second try: I wrote jpg's on another card, same type, and suddenly the card reader appears on the desktop. Sounds a little bit crazy?

It might be that version of the card, not that the card is faulty -some versions of some cards will have some camera/OS compatibility problems. When the new Canon 1 series came out there where problems with some Lexar cards that had worked no problem with the 1Ds.

Try registering your card at Sandisk and contacting Sandisk support. Card manufacturers are always working on compatibility issues.

  • 2 months later...

I realize this is an old thread, but I just got a Sandisk Extreme III 2 GB card and my card reader won't recognize the card either. My Sandisk Extreme III *1* GB card works fine.

Did anyone figure out solutions to their problems?

Thanks.
