Mauribix Posted October 13, 2010 Share #63 Posted October 13, 2010 Well guys, I'm there on friday evening too. Most probably after 21.00, once you get a meeting point let me know where it is, I'll get to you for our first "spritz". Hopefully we'll get drunk enough. Nick De Marco Posted October 15, 2010 Share #64 Posted October 15, 2010 I had the good idea to take the overnight train from Paris (booked a few weeks back) and arrive early Saturday am in Venice. Just got to the night station all packed and ready checked out of Paris hotel to find ... it's been cancelled due to French strike. They said I may be able to get a train tomorrow night but they don't know (I booked two nights stay in Vencie, Sat and Sun, so if there is a train I will come on Sunday morning. PLEASE CAN ANYONE READING THERE PASS THIS ON, obviously I shan't be able to come to the challenge meeting, or the evening meal on Saturday anymore:( As I made all these arrangements to do the challenge is there any chance I might be allowed to do the same 2 hour slot on Sunday (if I get there). I already decided I will be Leica M6/CV 35mm f1.4 and fuji neopan. I hope you let me do it, if I get there. The 'funny' thing was that I just thought how great to be here during the strike: I heard bangs in gare du nord station this afternoon and saw communist workers had taken over the entrance to eurostar and were shouting "general strike" whilst throwing red fireworks around. I joined them as they marched to another station, stopping and directing traffic as they went along without a policeman in site. I was happy to have my Leica in my hand to take some photos of it all. But that was meant to be the end of the strike, which had previously been scheduled to end on Wednesday! So now I'm stranded in Paris, missing Venice, paying two loads of hotels , and I can't even phone home i the UK as all phone lines seem to be down whenever I try. The news just said that strikes at oil refineries were now threatening the supply of fuel to airports in Paris so I hope the trains are back tomorrow... I suppose at least it is being part of history Vive la Revolution! Nick
eckart Posted October 15, 2010 Share #65 Posted October 15, 2010 Poor boy, Nick, my support is yours. I mean, all the challenge is question of honour and you are in a situation of "higher power", as we call in Germany. In my opinion you should get the chance to take part on Sunday. All the best, Eckart
farnz Posted October 15, 2010 Share #66 Posted October 15, 2010 Nick, v. sorry to hear that you've been stranded on Paris by the strike but hope you make it here on Sunday. So far 17 are here with more planning to arrive today (Saturday). Weather's been excellent so far with good weather forecast for the One Challenge today so it's looking promising. Rain on Sunday. Pete.
Nick De Marco Posted October 16, 2010 Share #67 Posted October 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you Eckart and Pete I have spent the morning trying to fund out about travel options. I cancelled my hotel for tonight in Venice. But then found that apparently the strike continues for the next 2 days so far as trains to Italy go. I just found an EasyJet flight from Paris arriving in Vencie tonight. So I shall be there - all going well - tonight (Sat) after all. It arrives at 6.25pm, but by the time I actually get there I fear it will be too late to join you guys for dinner, but if you are likely to be remaining there after 9pm I shall come and join then... It's a shame I am going to miss the good weather:mad: But I would rely like to be able to be part of the challenge taking photos tomorrow if you guys agree Nick
