arminw Posted January 11, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 11, 2007 Wonderful to get some insight into the belgrade surroundings . Very nicely captured and exposed ... you certainly have shown some interesting shots so far.
milsu Posted January 11, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted January 11, 2007 Stuart and Armin - thanks a lot! I am aware some previous posts were overexposed, that's because I made them during summer, and the contrast among light and dark parts was too large, so I tried to make a balance, but obviously didn't succeed. I'll try to think more on exposure subject in the future. Actually, these are not Belgrade surroundings - at this place, where the river Sava flows into river Danube (Dunav), Belgrade begun few thousand years ago, and was spreading between two rivers. milsu Posted January 11, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted January 11, 2007 Oops, sorry for my mistake , one shouldn't always make assumptions . Armin I see You have an MP and Lux 50 asph, so I shall forgive You. This area was always settled, at least from 5000 BC, and it's hard to tell who came first, but modern city begun with Romans. They built strong fortress (castrum) with city walls made of stones on the high rock above the place where river Savus flows into river Danuvius, and named it Singidunum, after earlier Celtic settlement which was some four kilometers on east. Here they placed permanent military camp of The Fourth Legion of Flavius. Nations who ruled the city were Romans, Byzantines, Serbs, Bulgars, Hungars, Turks, Austrians, and Germans. Belgrade is one city in the world with the most great battles held for it through history - 114, with more than six million warriors and people died. (That means like four times the entire current population of about 1,5 million.) "At this place on July 22nd 1456 defenders of Belgrade leaded by Janko Hunjadi made great victory against Turks." Janko Hunjadi (Hunyadi Yanossal) was Hungarian general. He is known in Serb epic poetry as hero Sibinjanin Janko (Janko from Sibinj), he was born in the town of Sibinj which is now in Romania. At that time, Belgrade was main Hungarian fortress defending the country against Turkish invasion, populated by Serbs and Hungars. (Sorry for the tree in upper right corner.)
