JackTheRipper Posted September 22, 2010 Author Share #22 Posted September 22, 2010 the D-lux 5 films more fps in HD than the lux 4 right? thanks for the b-day wish! Shootist Posted September 23, 2010 Share #23 Posted September 23, 2010 Bigger sensor on the V and it has a heck of a range.D lux 5 fits in the pocket and if it is anything like the DL4 will take great pictures. Buy both, LOL Cheers Jan No the V-Lux2 has a smaller sensor then the D-Lux5.

JackTheRipper Posted September 24, 2010 Author Share #25 Posted September 24, 2010 Bhphoto has a company that offers a protection plan for the D-lux 5 (3 years @ $111) covers against "Unintentional spills, drops, falls and impacts Screen damage resulting from ADH Cracked lens Electronics within the lenses" I'm not normally for extended coverages, but this sounds pretty good since I am going to travel a lot with this camera... My mom dropped a Canon digital camera once at an airport and it sure enough broke it. Any opinions about this warranty info? It's called the SageMax protection plan by New... and heck no I don't work for them or any camera/insurance company, I'm just curious to see what people think / if someone has had experience with them... thanks! Jack PS do yall know if the Leica D-lux 5 will come with a hot shoe protector?
farnz Posted September 24, 2010 Share #26 Posted September 24, 2010 Jack, As a rule I stay away from insurance protection plans or extended warranties on the grounds that they are similar to emerging from a river to find that leeches have quietly attached themselves to you and if you didn't see them you wouldn't know they were there but they still stealthily suck away at your blood. But that's just my view. Perhaps the thing to ask is not what is covered but what isn't, eg water damage, lens scratches, malfunction, confiscation by over-zealous police in a foreign country, that would leave you without a usable camera just when you need it. JackTheRipper Posted September 24, 2010 Author Share #27 Posted September 24, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I usually don't buy the insurance either, but 100$ for such an expensive camera, doesn't sound that bad... Plus, I like the peace of mind knowing accidents are covered... I think I'll try it out and let yall know how it is ;-)

Plus, I like the peace of mind knowing accidents are covered... I think I'll try it out and let yall know how it is ;-) 2 things: i put a rider on my homeowners policy (for my x1 w/no deductible applying [ie full coverag] it costs $40.00/year- covers for theft, mysterious disapperance or destruction from some other covered loss- ie house burns down w/camera in it)- for extended warranty - i used my amex platinum card to buy- it extends mfg warranty by doubling it- (2yrs becomes 4 years) of course this does not give me any coverage if i drop and destroy it (unless i commit a felony by committing insurance fraud and declaring it lost to the carrier) and as a licensed attorney i would never do that- but others may
JackTheRipper Posted September 24, 2010 Author Share #29 Posted September 24, 2010 not bad laz, how is the X1? I wanted to get it myself at one time, but I dunno if I could live without a zoom... Very nice camera though, no doubt... !

Very nice camera though, no doubt... ! the camera "just feels right" to me....it takes great images the way i look at it - its about a 1500 lens with a 500 digital back i do not need the zoom...when i started shooting in the mid-60's ( as wee young lad) i never had a zoom and really didnt have but 1 or 2 telephotos (depending on what stuff my dad had at the time - usually a 90mm or 135mm- certainly not long telephotos by any means) so i have had alot of practice using a "normal 50mm" or a "wide-normal 35mm" lens when i get to cross that african safari off my bucket list- i will be in the market for something "zoomie" but until then ( or something newer prettier shinier comes along) the x1 is my main camera

farnz Posted September 24, 2010 Share #32 Posted September 24, 2010 anyone happen to know if the D-lux 5 comes with a hot shoe protector? I don't think so but wouldn't a hot shoe protector from another black camera do since the hot shoe is a standard size, Jack? Pete.
JackTheRipper Posted September 25, 2010 Author Share #33 Posted September 25, 2010 I have no idea man, would make sense to me, but I don't know much about cameras. Do you think the D-lux 5 will fit in the nice brown leather leica case? that is such a nice, beautiful case, I really want one! Oh yea, the D-lux 5 will come with a full version of Lightroom 3... Any opinions on this software?

Any opinions on this software? Jack, It looks doubtful because the relative dimensions are: D-Lux 4: 109 x 60 x 44 mm D-Lux 5: 110 x 66 x 43 mm so the DL5 will be 6 mm taller than the DL4. LR3 is excellent. Pete.
wlaidlaw Posted September 25, 2010 Share #35 Posted September 25, 2010 I think the clip on EVF is the biggest advantage of the DX5. Other than taking close up or macro shots of objects for eBay, technical illustrations etc, I hate holding a camera at arms length to take photos. The little EVF's are not optically wonderful but it is a lot better than trying to see an LCD in bright sunlight or when you are bouncing along in a 4WD or bus on holiday. I use the EVF all the time on my small back up camera, a Ricoh GX200. My experience of the abilities of these superzoom compacts is that pic quality at full zoom is a bit marginal (my son has a Pana TZ7 with a 12X Leica zoom). If you do want a long lens and good pics, I think you have to go for a DSLR (or a Visoflex/M9 like I use). Wilson
farnz Posted September 25, 2010 Share #36 Posted September 25, 2010 Thanks, Wilson, it's good to know that clip-on EVFs are useful. (Any bets on how long it is before we see the first thread about "Best bag for DL5 and EVF?":D) Pete.

I don't miss 3 atall. Just my $.02.

BTW, I downloaded the trial version of LR 3 and used it for a month, then went back to LR 2. I don't miss 3 atall. Just my $.02. I haven't used LR 3 yet but many people are saying that it handles noise far better than LR 2.x. For example, M8 shots at ISO 2500 can be reprocessed in LR 3 so the noise becomes much less prominent and the shots are usable. Pete.
USA road racer Posted October 3, 2010 Share #40 Posted October 3, 2010 do you think the Leica D-lux 4 and 5 have the exact same sensor? The only difference between the two cameras will be the case design if they are like the Dlux4 / LX3. They are IDENTICAL cameras inside made from the same parts with the same part numbers on them. They are made on the same assembly line by the same people. Only thing that MAY differ would be the firmware in jpeg processing. And you can duplicate either or with custom settings. My friend has a LXC3 and I had a Dlux4. We took them apart just see what was inside. They are the SAME cameras made by Panasonic from Panasonic parts with a Lecia DESIGNED lens. The lens is made by Panasonic in Japan, not by Lecia in Germany.
