I've been in the market for a Leica for a long time... Now, they have finally made cameras within my price range (I don't really care if they are really panasonic)...

I thought the D-lux 5 would be the camera for me, but the V-lux 2 looks pretty awesome...

and they are pretty close in price, if the website I'm reading is correct...

can anyone persuade me to one? thanks! :)

Jack

PS I just bought my fiance, for her b-day, the Canon SD3500 IS... so maybe I should get whatever is opposite of her... Plus I'm in my late 20s and am looking to marry next year, what would be more of the family style camera? (But I also travel like crazy too) thanks!

I don't really take wildlife pics... Some recent travels are Panama, Thailand, Qatar, Spain, etc...

More of a person, architecture, close up wildlife (not birds far off or anything)...

The D-lux 5 looks exciting... Plus it makes me weary that they are so close in price... Maybe the V-lux 2 is a cheapo camera...

i have not handled either camera.....so take this for what it is worth....

i used the dlux4 for 2 years before obtaining the x1

the dlux4 was a great little travel camera... small/pocketable/versatile great macro and it didn't make me tired carrying it around

the vlux appears to be much larger and probably heavier as well.....

i am literally days away from my 54th birthday (g*d i am old) and i just don't have the energy anymore to carry big heavy cameras/bags etc- so i would go with the dlux - but you may be more energetic than i

do you think the Leica D-lux 4 and 5 have the exact same sensor?

Nearly but perhaps not quite:

DL4_____________ DL5 (based on LX5 info)

10.1 MP_________10.1 MP________Effective pixels

1/1.63 "__________1/1.63 "________Sensor size

CCD_____________CCD__________Sensor type

22 MP/cm²_______24 MP/cm²______Pixel density

_

So the DL4 has fewer pixels per cm², which theoretically suggests better noise performance. But note that the LX3 also has 24 MP/cm², which suggests that the Leica and Panasonic cameras had different sensors in the previous model and will probably have the same sensors in the new model.

So after all that the smart money is on the DL5 having the same sensor as the DL4. I think I need a lie down now.:o

I believe I'll go with the D-lux 5...

Next month is my b-day, so this will be the perfect gift...:-)

think this will be released before Oct 19th?

think the d-lux 4 leather case will fit it?

other than the sensor, is there anything new with the camera?

and can you change lenses? or is it a fixed lens?

many thanks!

...

My dealers says October/November so it's anyone's guess:o and I suspect November/December.

...

It looks unlikely.

other than the sensor, is there anything new with the camera?

90mm zoom lens and a clip-on accessory EVF.

...

and can you change lenses? or is it a fixed lens?

Fixed 28 to 90 f/2 to f/3.3 fixed zoom lens.

Actually, 24 to 90 equivalent.

Pete--Curious: Where do you get a difference in pixel density? Both the LX3 and the LX5 seem to have the same sensor, judging from the Panasonic site.

D'oh! Yes, typo: 24 to 90. Thanks, Howard.

As I mentioned above the LX3 and LX5 both have 24 MP/cm² pixel density but the DL4 had 22 MP/cm² (source: DPReview). I confused the issued by initially assuming that the DL5 will be a LX5 with some minor tweaks and then noticed the pixel density discrepancy between the Leica line and the Panasonic line.

I recall he prospect of different lens coating and different software cited as variations between the DL4 and LX3 but I don't recall anyone mentioning the pixel density (although I stand to be corrected.:o)
