D-LUX 4 Owners: Who's Upgrading to the D-LUX 5?

I note that Leica has rehashed the back of the DL5 and there is now a thumbwheel at top right and the switch for reviewing/chimping is gone so presumably the bottom arrow button needs to be programmed to do that. Or perhaps it's the top right button with ">" (Shame if the bottom button needs to be set to review because I use it to adjust ISO.:o)

I will keep mine and instead buy an x1 or m9. keep going back and forth on which to buy. complaints about x1 speed etc but no one seems to be sending it off to get repaired while the m9 everyone loves except that it is always going to solms to get focusing adjusted or replace a cracked sensor. as good as the m9 is, it may still be a bit early to spend that much for a digital camera. 2000 is high but a reasonable step. and as for the video, have no interest whatsoever. btw, i absolutely love my d4, best digital i have ever owned. best camera was the canon f1n -- ready to return to that level of camera with digital but dslrs are too big and heavy and m9 is just too much money for a product priced as if it will last forever like an m7. imho.

on d-lux5 you get one stop boots because better iso which should be now excellent until iso 800 and somehow acceptable at 1600. still pushing iso on small sensors can cause some wired artefacts.

i'm not so interested on long zoom, even more if cannot have at least and f2.8. in indoor situations most likely you'll need flash at full zoom, and i really hate this combination.

d-lux4 it's just fine for moment, maybe a secondary camera like fuji x100 it's just fine, instead of an upgrade.

I understand what you're saying but if you're getting one stop boost on ISO doesn't that effectively change your 90 mm f/3.3 at the tele end of the lens to a 90 f/2.5?

Incidentally, where did you hear about the one stop ISO boost on the DL5?:)

Pete,

I didn't find side by side DL4 and DL5 pictures on high ISO (maybe someone could do that) but from samples that I saw noise seems to be at the same level but one ISO level higher for DL5. It's not a ISO boost, it's just a better ISO performance (one stop). my fault

and for the previous post, yes jsrockit ... I really love my DL4, so much as it deserves a quality companion camera as x100! ;)

After my DLux-4 was stolen, I will be getting an LX5. I got my DLux-4 on a steal of a price so it was economical for me. I paid only $60 USD more than an LX3. However, after seeing my DLux-4 a friend found an LX3 at another great price. We then compared photos, we really could not find ANY difference between them (he did a slight color adjust on his camera). So, I don't think I want to spend $799 USD for a DLux-5 when I can get a LX5 for $479. The Red Dot isn't worth that money. I also like the case on the Panasonic better than the Leica version. Since they are both built by the same people with the same parts in the same place, I think a custom color setting would equal the Leica firmware as my friend has done with his LX3. Contrary to common belief, I believe that call that series of cameras are identical except for the packaging (case design). I also think the firmware is so close, it would never matter especially if you shoot RAW.

Agreed, but if you factor in the cost of buying Lightroom 3 separately there just went the $300 difference. If you aren't interested in LR3, then the LX5 is clearly the better value.

The only thing that *really* tempts me to go from the DL4 to the DL5: that 90mm zoom.

But you now, I used to shoot a lot of SLR with a 30-300mm zoom, and after using the DL4 for those situations where I would not have the SLR I suddenly realized I could live without the 300mm zoom. Yes, I miss a few shots, but not great ones. Yes, I'd love the 90mm for better portrait shots, but the 60 does pretty well. And I can usually get by with the digital zoom within that range without too much degradation although it does not flatten as well as with a true 90mm.

Regarding the 1:1 aspect ratio, Leica put out a firmware update for that for the DL4. And also included high dynamic range.

I don't shoot enough video for zooming, etc., to matter, but if I did I would consider that a major inducement.

Leica engineers, if you read this: how about an off-camera standalone Leica strobe that communicates optically (receive only) with the flash in the DL4 or DL5 for firing parameters? I'd buy one of those (name your price or I will help you test it out). That way I could get decent strobe shots at decent strobe angles and not use an on-camera strobe or an annoying RF communication box almost as big as the DL4 or DL5. Optical communication should work simply with a firmware change (after you figure out the protocol and design the standalone flash). If you made this, I have no doubt you'd find a large market for it. Minolta used to do this and it worked just wonderfully.

I'm happy with my DL-4 though I bought it last December(2009). I was wandering about VL-2. I read the reviews, but the tech. data was not setisfactory! Before reading I was thinking I woul buy one, but I think I rather wait for the next one! I they make one combinding DL-4 n VL-2... I wander!
